About Me[edit | edit source]

Hi there, I’m GondolinFan. I somehow stumbled upon Tolkien Gateway around 2009, and since then, I’ve used this site on-and-off as my main go-to for anything related to the works of Tolkien. Towards the end of 2021, I very tentatively decided to create an account and edit an article (putting aside fears of somehow doing something silly or “messing things up”) which I thought could be improved.

My goals here[edit | edit source]

Favourite Lines/Quotes[edit | edit source]

Lots! Tolkien has such a beautiful way of writing, and I think the film trilogy to a large part does him justice! Below are a few of my favourites, (which may end up being from adaptations too)

  • "A generous deed should not be checked with cold counsel" - Gandalf (books)/Faramir (films) to Pippin
  • "Then Beren and Lúthien went through the Gate, and down the labyrinthine stairs; and together wrought the greatest deed that has been dared by Elves or Men." - The Silmarillion, "Of Beren and Lúthien"
  • "All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us." - Gandalf to Frodo
  • "‘Many are the strange chances of the world,’ said Mithrandir, ‘and help oft shall come from the hands of the weak when the Wise falter.’" - The Silmarillion, "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age"
  • "I give thee the wondrous jewel thou didst desire, and it is but a little thing found by the wayside, for once methinks thou hadst one beyond thought more beautiful, and she is now mine." - Beren to Tinwelint in the Tale of Tinúviel
  • As Beren prepares to cross Anfauglith, he sings of Lúthien:

'Though all to ruin fell the world,
and were dissolved and backward hurled
unmade into the old abyss,
yet were its making good, for this—
the dawn, the dusk, the earth, the sea—
that Lúthien on a time should be!'

- The Lay of Leithian, Canto XI

Books/stories I've read[edit | edit source]

Books I plan on reading soon[edit | edit source]

Books I've dipped into[edit | edit source]

To do[edit | edit source]

Jotting ideas down here so I don't forget.

  • Beren
    • History - Celegorm, Curufin, Leap
  • Clean up OVOTL for relevant characters in the Tale of Tinúviel for those that need it
  • Elvish word article name consistency. See discussion at Talk:Man (word).
