Tar-Súrion was the ninth King of Númenor. He was the third child of Tar-Anárion.[1]

History[edit | edit source]

Though each of his elder sisters had a claim on the Sceptre ahead of Súrion, they disliked and feared the old Queen, their grandmother, Queen Tar-Ancalimë, and refused to become their father's Heir, and so the Kingship of Númenor passed eventually to Tar-Súrion.[3]

The history of Tar-Súrion's 162 years reigning years was fated to be dominated by the female side of the royal line. Not only was his inheritance due to the actions of his grandmother and elder sisters, but his own eldest child was a daughter, who would reign in her own right as Tar-Telperiën, Númenor's second Ruling Queen after he gave up the Sceptre at the age of 382 years.[2]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Súrion is a Quenya name. Its meaning is not glossed, but Paul Strack suggests it means "Wind-son" as a compound of súrë ("wind") and the patronymic suffix -ion ("son of").[4] Like all the rulers of Númenor who took their royal names in Quenya, Súrion added the prefix tar- ("high") to his name when he received the Sceptre.[5]
