Talk:Tuor

Etymology[edit source]

Linguistics isn't by strong suit, so I wouldn't mind some guidance on this section. I couldn't find any explicit etymologies of Tuor given by Tolkien in the Letters, Silmarillion or UT, nor could I find any elements of it in the Silmarillion's appendix. So all the information comes from The Etymologies in HoME and I don't know how to treat that in terms of canon. —Aulë the Smith (Tk·Cb) 12:37, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oh, here are the two relevant entries from HoMe. I'm not sure that the section as it currently stands is using them properly:
GOR- violence, impetus, haste. Q orme haste, violence, wrath; orna hasty. N gormh, gorf impetus, vigour; gorn impetuous. [Apart from the removal of the form gormh this original entry was retained, with these additions:] Cf. Celegorn [KYELEK]; and cf. Huor, Tuor: Khōgore [KHŌ-N], Tūgore [TUG].
TUG- *tūgu: Q tuo; ON túgo, N ; Ilk. tûgh, ; muscle, sinew; vigour, physical strength. Cf. name Tuor (older tūghor = tū-gor 'strength vigour', see :GOR).
So to recap, my questions are a) how does The Etymologies stand canonically? and b) is the information above currently being used accurately in the "etymology" section"? —Aulë the Smith (Tk·Cb) 12:47, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The problem with the Etymologies is that most of it is Noldorin - the real world precursor of Sindarin, much of it is contradicted by later sources. In this case, no other etymologies exist (afaik). It should be pointed out that, at an early stage during the conception of the character, Tolkien devised an etymology... blah blah blah.
I do wonder where the translation "strong haste" comes from, since your quote gives a different translation. -- Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 16:42, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
They misread the entry for GOR-, maybe. Anyway, I have rewritten the etymology section along the lines you suggested. Still not completely happy with it but it's the best I can do with my limited knowledge of the linguistic side of the legendarium. —Aulë the Smith (Tk·Cb) 17:56, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Expansion[edit source]

Well I've exhausted all the sources I own now. Is there anything else to add? If not, can I humbly suggest removing the "expansion" tag? :D —Aulë the Smith (Tk·Cb) 13:00, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oh, actually. This article is severely lacking in dates. Need to find some of them. —Aulë the Smith (Tk·Cb) 13:28, 15 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I agree that Template:Expansion can go, but perhaps it could be replaced by Template:Sources: I'd like to see sources in the sections Journeys in the Wild, Life in Gondolin, Fall of Gondolin and Fate so the article is really top-notch. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 11:34, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Those are sourced - but I've skipped the inline citations for "Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin" and "Of Tuor and his Coming to Gondolin" in favour of putting them in the "General references" section, otherwise there would be a [1][2] at the end of every sentence! Everything in the article that is not taken directly from those two chapters, the The Grey Annals or the Tale of Years in the case of dates, or the Fall of Gondolin in the case of the section with that title, I've made sure has an inline citation. All the quotes also have page references even if they are from the general sources. Hope that is acceptable. —Aulë the Smith (Tk·Cb) 11:21, 19 August 2010 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Infobox Image Proposal[edit source]

I propose that the portrait of Tuor by Līga Kļaviņa should be used for Tuor's infobox. In my opinion, Līga's portrait better portrays Tuor as Tolkien describes him: golden-haired, and younger of age (twenties) during his travels from Dor-lómin to Vinyamar. Ted Nasmith is a wonderful artist, but unlike the Tuor that Tolkien describes, his Tuor is brown-haired and older in appearance than Tuor at the time when he came across the city of Vinyamar. --Edrastel 04:51, 17 May 2016 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Disagree. The existing image better places Tuor within the context of his story. --09:01, 29 May 2016 (UTC)
