- 1984 - The Book of Lost Tales Part One is published in the US.
- 1963 - Jane Neave, aunt of J.R.R. Tolkien, dies.
- 2004 - At the 10th Screen Actors Guild Awards, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King wins the award for "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture". The award is accepted by Bernard Hill.

In the text we are told that "the white rind of the new Moon could be seen glimmering in the remote lakes", which puts the actual new Moon rather earlier than astronomy would calculate.[2]
