Farewell Dear Bilbo is the fifth scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and the sixth scene of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (extended edition).

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

Bilbo returns to Bag End and begins packing, but he is soon interrupted by Gandalf. Gandalf questions Bilbo regarding the Ring, concerned about Bilbo's unhealth attachment to it. Bilbo turns defensive, then grows angry and accuses Gandalf of attempting to steal it. Gandalf uses his own power to overawe Bilbo briefly and bring him to reality. Bilbo reluctantly agrees to give up the Ring, but requires further prompting from Gandalf. He finally drops the Ring on the floor as he leaves the house. Bilbo suddenly feels relieved and sets off into the night after bidding Gandalf farewell.

Differences[edit | edit source]

The scene is largely accurate to the chapter "A Long-expected Party", though Bilbo does leave with Nar and some Dwarves to the east.
