West (disambiguation)
From Tolkien Gateway
West is a relative term in Arda, usually associated with the sunset. It was known in Sindarin as annûn and dûn, in Quenya as andúnë and númen and in Adûnaic as adûn.
Middle-earth
Location
- The Uttermost West or Far West over the Sea, is Aman. There, the Valar dwell, and there, the Elves go when they "sail West".
- Beleriand, the most western land east of Belegaer. Elves who dwelt here were occasionally known as Dúnedhil, West-elves, to distinguish them from the Avari.
- The West, or Westernesse, lies in Belegaer, to the West of Middle-earth. The Dúnedain, or Men of the West, take their name after this sense.
- After the drowning of both Beleriand and Númenor, the West generally referred to Middle-earth, or at least those who opposed Sauron.
- Completely impervious to any history, the Hobbits used "West" to distinguish them from "East", the Rangers.
It is also used in several place names:
- West Beleriand
- The Westfarthing
- The Westmarch
- The West-mark
- The West-gate of Bree
