Unanswerable questions that keep me up nights

Fourth Age

  • What happened to Elladan and Elrohir?
  • When exactly did Celeborn leave Middle-earth? Did he leave before 171 and Findegil just didn't know about it? If after, when?
    • Did Círdan (and/or literally all remaining Elves of the First Age) actually take ship with Celeborn, or are we being overly literal in our interpretation of "the last living memory of the Elder Days?" Bombadil and Treebeard are still around, after all.
  • Were there any Noldor at all remaining in Middle-earth after the White Ship left? The Silmarillion suggests not, Appendix A hedges.
    • Did any Noldor remain after the Last Ship left?
    • Did any Noldor or Sindar choose to fade in Middle-earth rather than leave?
    • Did anyone else build their own ship (cf. Legolas) after the "Last" Ship?
    • Did any of the Silvans or Avari go West?

First Age

  • Why didn't Orodreth send Finduilas to Círdan for safekeeping at the same time as Ereinion?
    • What years were Finduilas and Ereinion born?
    • Why would Orodreth rather put his son in the keeping of the Falathrim than his own kin of the House of Finarfin in Nargothrond?
    • Why would Orodreth consider Nargothrond safe enough for his daughter, but not his wife and son?
    • My speculation on the subject is as follows:
      • Perhaps Finduilas was already an adult when Minas Tirith fell to Sauron so there was no need to protect her in that way, whereas Ereinion was a child (i.e. under 50 years old) or even an infant.
      • Orodreth may not have preferred the Elves of the Falas over fellow Noldor as guardians of his family, but his wife was a Sinda, perhaps even of the Falathrim herself, so maybe she insisted.
      • Perhaps the family was split up during the chaos of the fall of Minas Tirith, and either the wife fled as far south down Sirion as she could on her own initiative, or Orodreth sent her as far south as he could because he didn't know how far Morgoth's forces would penetrate south of Tol Sirion. (Keeping in mind that the Falathrim could be her kin, so may be a natural place to turn.)
      • I expect the family would have had a chance to reunite before the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, certainly after Lúthien drove Sauron out of Tol-in-Gaurhoth and Orodreth became King of Nargothrond and expelled the Sons of Fëanor, but maybe the situation in West Beleriand was still too dicey for such a journey to be undertaken safely.
        • Maybe Ereinion and his mother just had no desire to return to Orodreth, or recognized that the bridge was a bad call and wanted no part of it. Big oof in that case.

Things I like

  • FAQ of the Rings – Mostly great information and some interesting speculation about the Rings of Power.
  • The Last Ringbearer – The very best fan fiction ever written, and possibly the only work of fan fiction with genuine literary merit.
