Tribute Space

First off, I’d like to pay tribute to my usernamesake (add that to the list of words I’ve made up), Meriadoc Brandybuck, known to the men of Rohan as Holdwine of the Mark. He was, in my personal opinion, a very brave and noble Hobbit, good friends with his younger cousin Peregrin Took, and just my favorite character in general. I am very proud to be paying tribute to him, both here and in real life (because apparently I look like him and I have a good friend who is Pippin to my Merry). Now excuse me while I throw this knife at the big freaky Ringwraith bearing down on me for writing this.

About Me

Hello there! I'm Holdwine Meriadoc and I am an avid tolkienist from the U.S.A. I first started reading The Hobbit when I was nine, and two years later, after I told my dad that I had just finished listening to the audiobook for the fifth time, he decided to let me move on to The Lord of the Rings. I read the entire trilogy in about three months. Since then, I have been collecting a steady stream of Tolkien's works and companion books.

My favorite character in all the legendarium is, as you can tell from my name, Meriadoc Brandybuck, not only because the book version of himself and myself are very similar but because I don't want him to be too "overlooked" (wink, wink).

I am a fan of the movie trilogy, but I try not to get that and the real thing confused. I am just really mad that they didn't include Tom Bombadil. If you want to hear me rant, go to the Talk page. I love ranting...

I haven't done any major rewriting yet; I usually just fix grammar problems and add source citations.

Random Other Facts

  • I do think that Balrogs have wings, but that they are nonfunctional, Durin's Bane was too stupid to use them, or it hadn't used them for so long they were basically dead.
  • I believe that Huorns are Ents that have become tree-ish.
  • I'm American but I use British idioms.
  • How does a giant spider throw a ball? Shelobs it. (That's my dad's joke, not mine)
  • I speak a few useful phrases of Sindarin.
  • I fell out of a tree and injured my left shoulder immediately after I finished reading The Return of the King.
  • I am a Christian and proud of it.

Favorite Quotes

"'Well, here is the strangest riddle that we have yet found!' exclaimed Legolas. 'A bound prisoner escapes both from the Orcs and from the surrounding horsemen. He then stops, while still in the open, and cuts his bonds with an orc-knife. But how and why? For if his legs were tied, how did he walk? And if his arms were tied, how did he use the knife? And if neither were tied, why did he cut the cords at all? Being pleased with his skill, he then sat down and quietly ate some waybread! That is at least enough to show he was a hobbit, without the mallorn-leaf. After that, I suppose, he turned his arms into wings and flew away singing into the trees.'" -- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers

"Yes, I am afraid trolls do behave like that, even those with only one head each." -- J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

"'I am Gandalf, and Gandalf means me!'" -- Gandalf, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

"Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?" -- Gandalf, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit

"Roads go on forever, but I can't without a rest. It's high time for lunch." -- Peregrin Took, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

"Great heart will not be denied." -- Théoden, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King

"It is best to love first what you are fitted to love, I suppose: you must start somewhere and have some roots[...]." -- Meriadoc Brandybuck, J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of the King
