Tolkien Gateway's official chat server is located at irc.tolkiengateway.net port: 6667 for IRC clients and averages 3-5 users in the main lobby. If you have no idea what that says, then you probably want to use the browser-based client, Mibbit:

Tolkien Gateway's official chat or IRC (Internet Relay Chat) was an old plataform where any editor, user, or members of the public could chat with other like-minded folk about Tolkien Gateway, J.R.R. Tolkien, or anything they wish. The purpose of the IRC was to enable editors to discuss Tolkien Gateway as well as meet fellow Tolkien enthusiasts. As the active users of the wiki decreased, the chat became eventually obsolete and its platform was never updated.

Currently there is no official chat, but relaunching it in a Discord Server is being tested.

X-Chat was an open source IRC client for Linux, Windows and Mac based operating systems. X-Chat could be scripted with plug-ins in a number of programming languages: Perl, Python, Tcl, and Ruby, which were available as external plugins and contain a binary module interface, usually for the C programming language.

On Linux, X-Chat was available through the package managers of most distributions. On Debian-based systems, such as Ubuntu, simply type sudo apt-get install xchat in a terminal.

On Windows, the official xchat programme was shareware and required a fee of $20(USD) after its trial period of 30 days.
