tir- is a Quenya verb meaning "watch, guard, heed". Compare with the Sindarin noun tirith.

Examples:

  • palantíri = "Watch Far and Wide" (colloquially translated as "Seeing-stones")
  • Tirion = "[City of] the Watchers"
