The Root of the Boot is a poem written by J.R.R. Tolkien, set to the tune of The Fox Went Out. It was published in Songs for the Philologists. It has been reprinted in The Poetry of J.R.R. Tolkien, The Tolkien Papers: Mankato Studies in English, The Annotated Hobbit and, in a revised form, in The Return of the Shadow. It is an early version of the poem The Stone Troll.
