The Root of the Boot is a poem written by J.R.R. Tolkien. It was published in Songs for the Philologists. It was reprinted in The Tolkien Papers: Mankato Studies in English, The Annotated Hobbit and, in a revised form, in The Return of the Shadow. It is an early version of the poem The Stone Troll.
