What are the sources of the specific route taken by the Eldar? The Great East Road, the High Pass etc? I think I have read them as Fonstad's speculations, but is there a better source? Sage 12:38, 30 November 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Not that I can think of. I'll see if I can find something, though. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 10:55, 3 December 2014 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Crossing the Misty Mountains and Eriador

We have the following sources:

Morgoth's Ring: The Annals of Aman

§61 This river, it is said, was even that river that was after called Anduin the Great, and was ever the frontier of the Westlands of Middle-earth. But the mountains were the Hithaeglir, the Towers of Mist upon the borders of Eriador; yet they were taller and more terrible in those days, and they were reared by Melkor to hinder the riding of Oromë. Now the Teleri abode long on the east-bank of the River and wished to remain there, but the Vanyar and the Noldor passed the River with the aid of Oromë, and he led them to the passes of the mountains. And when Oromë was gone forward the Teleri looked upon the shadowy heights and were afraid.

§63 And when again ten years had passed, the Vanyar and Noldor came at length over the mountains that stood between Eriador and the westernmost land of Middle-earth, that the Elves after named Beleriand. And the foremost companies passed over the Vale of Sirion and came to the shores of the Great Sea. Then great fear came upon them, and many repented sorely of their journey and withdrew into the woods of Beleriand. And Oromë returned to Valinor to seek the counsel of Manwë.

The Nature of Middle-earth: The March of the Quendi

The host, now 25,000 strong, moves across the Anduin, but finds the Hithaeglir impassible. Some are lost in the attempt. Eventually they wander south through woods into the plain of later Rohan (Calenardhon). The Teleri lag again.

The Ingar and Ñoldor settle at last about the Isen (near later Isengard). The wandering has taken about four löar (1130/95). The main host halts for a long while. The Teleri straggle in.

A new begetting of children begins in 1130/100...

A new begetting began in 1130/140, but not so many produce children. Some have already produced four. Also, women are getting [?unruly] because of difficulties of children and many are eager now to go on. ... Oromë is impatient. They wait nonetheless until the youngest children are 12 [GY], that is, 144 [sun-]years = 1 VY = VY 1132/5

The Eldar scheme to beget no more children till Beleriand. The host of the Ingar and Ñoldor move west till it comes to Gwathló (about 260 miles) at the end of 1132/9.

Here they wait for the first of the lagging Teleri who come up in 1132/10 and help the Ingar and Ñoldor across. Olwë and rest come slowly on behind. The Ingar and Ñoldor reach the Baranduin in 1132/11. They are now near the southern end of the Ered Luin.

They are led in 1132/12 to eastern Beleriand “which is safe”. In the next few years they accomplish about 800 miles by [?drawing] about to the area of Western Doriath. Say about 1132/17 they reach the coast of Beleriand.[20] The March is over.

I don't see any citation for Oromë creating the High Pass, or specifically leading the Elves through it; let alone the road they took through Eriador. Oberiko (talk) 23:19, 11 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
