In the chapter "Flight to the Ford" in Book I of The Fellowship of the Ring, when Aragorn finds a pale green jewel he says, "It is a beryl, an elf-stone." My reading of this is that elf-stone means beryl, i.e. that elf-stones are always beryl. Would it not then be more than conjecture to say that any elessar is probably a variety of beryl? Beryls are minerals of a type that includes not just emeralds but also aquamarines (which can come in green). If others agree this is a fair conclusion to draw, it might be interesting to include.
