Soronto was a Man of the royal lineage of Númenor, the grandson of Tar-Meneldur and son of Ailinel, a sister of Tar-Aldarion. He lived during the later years of the first millennium of the Second Age. His father was Orchaldor, a descendant of the House of Hador.

Before the change in Númenor's law that turned the order of succession into cognatic primogeniture, Soronto was heir presumptive to the throne. After Tar-Aldarion changed the laws to allow his daughter Ancalimë to rule, he had little chance of gaining power. But because of a clause in the changed law that said that the Queen had to marry in order to keep her position, Soronto apparently remained hopeful of receiving the Sceptre due to Tar-Ancalimë's reluctance to wed. Nevertheless, she did eventually marry, solely to spite Soronto and keep him from taking her place.

Etymology

Soronto's name apparently means "Man of the Eagle" in Quenya (from soron, 'eagle', and the masculine suffix -to).
