Pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien brings together a wide array of paintings, sketches and pictures by J.R.R. Tolkien that were published in the Official calendars from The J.R.R. Tolkien Calendar 1973 up to the J.R.R. Tolkien Calendar 1979. Some of these reproductions were previously published only in truncated form and are now seen whole.
The book includes Foreword and Notes by Christopher Tolkien. It was first published by George Allen & Unwin in 1979 (November 1).
New content includes some previously unpublished original pen-and-ink sketches (previously published only as coloured versions by H.E. Riddett) but excluding (with one exception) the illustrations of The Father Christmas Letters.
