Iant Iaur was a stone bridge which was built in ancient days by the people of Doriath on the northern borders of their land. It crossed the Esgalduin into Dor Dínen. At the time that it was originally constructed, which was long before Morgoth returned to Middle-earth, it known by another name; Esgaliant, the "Esgalduin Bridge". Later, in the Fourth Age, the valley where it stood, an the surrounding hills to the north, became a place of terror and dread. After that, the bridge was used very little. All the same, it still stood, and it became known as Iant Iaur, which means "Old Bridge".
