The Great West Road was the name of the portion of the Great Road east of the Fords of Isen and was known as a horse-road.[1] Practically it connected Edoras with Minas Tirith[2] where it was mentioned as the North-way[3] or the North Road[4][note 1]

Course

Two miles east from the Isen it bent sharply to the south-east to meet the Deeping-road and again bent to the east and Edoras.[5] It passed across Calenardhon/Rohan parallel to the White Mountains, the Folde, the Fenmarch and traversed the Firien Wood into Anórien. It ran around the Drúadan Forest and ran to the south into the Pelennor Fields, outside of Minas Tirith. Then the route continued as the South Road[6][4] passing over Erui, and reached Pelargir.[7]

Notes

  1. The name "North Road" is used on an unnamed map of the surroundings of Minas Tirith that was drawn by J.R.R. Tolkien during the writing of The Lord of the Rings, which is electronically labelled MINAS TIRITH on the Website of the Tolkien Estate.
