Gimli was a Gnome in the early version of the legendarium in The Book of Lost Tales. He was liberated from the thraldom of Tevildo along with Beren. His captivity had left him blind but with keen hearing.[1]
Etymology
The Gnomish word gimli ("sense of hearing") is clearly related to this name.[2]
