George Hosato Takei Altman (April 20, 1937) is an American actor, best known as Mr. Sulu of Star Trek fame. He was good friends with his co-star Leonard Nimoy until Mr. Nimoy passed away on February 27, 2015.

In 1991, conductor David Warble asked Takei to provide the narration for Johan de Meij's Symphony No. 1, "The Lord of the Rings". Out of curiosity and admiration of The Lord of the Rings, Takei agreed. The show premiered in the Fall of 1991 in the Orange County Performing Arts Center, and has since been performed on many places in the world.
