The hall was likely built by Durin I, who settled in the caves that would become the greatest city of the Dwarves, Khazad-dûm.

Thousands of years later his descendants (Durin's folk) fled their ancients mansions when Durin's Bane was awakened, and the First Hall along with all the rest of the city was abandoned.

several hundred years later Sauron started to people Khazad-dûm (now called Moria) with his creatures, along with the other Orcs that lived in the Misty Mountains.  There they lived for hundreds of years multiplying in it's depths, until King Thrór of Durin's folk returned, and entered Moria through the First Hall.  He was later murdered by the Orc Chieftain, Azog who proclaimed himself King of Moria.

Not long afterward, Thrór's son, Thráin II declared war on Azog and all the Orcs of those mountains.  Nine years after six years of fighting the Dwarves had driven all the Orc armies south to Moria.  And in that valley the Battle of Azanulbizar was fought.  The Orcs were located in front of the East-gate and reinforcements came out from the Fist Hall, and below it on the slopes and the road that led to the city.  And the Dwarves were below it a little south of Lake Mirrormere.
In the stalemate of the battle Dwarves from the Iron Hills came to reinforce and drove their way up to the gate.  During this encounter their leader Náin
was killed by Azog on the steps, but he soon found that his army was in a rout, and ran for the First Hall.  But just as he was about to get through the gate he was killed by Dáin II Ironfoot son of Náin.
After the battle Thráin wanted to enter Moria, but Dáin warned him of the still lingering Durin's bane, which Dáin after killing Azog had seen as a shadow beyond the gate.

over a hundred years later, Balin a Dwarf of high nobility tried to reestablish Durin's folk in Moria.  He came to the East-gate and killed the orc-guards stationed there.  Not long after that he reclaimed much of Khazad-dûm and became quite successful, even becoming Lord of Moria.  But before the colony had been there four years Balin was killed by and orc-arrow.  Soon after that, orc-reinforcements came from the north and drove the Dwarves back through the First Hall, Second Hall, and all the way to their base of operations the Twenty-first Hall.  Then lastly the Chamber of Mazarbul, where the last surviving Dwarves made a last stand, and perished.

Many years after after the disaster of Balin's colony, the Fellowship of the Ring passed though Moria.  After the Battle of the Chamber of Mazarbul, and seeing Durin's bane fall with Gandalf, they eventually made it to the First Hall.  Killing an Orc gate captain, and out it's gate to Lothlórien.

Sometime during the after the War of the Ring it is believed that Moria was recolonized. For gates of Mithril were forged for the city of Minas Tirith.  And also
Sometime during the Fourth Age, King Durin VII came to Khazad-dúm and refounded the ancestral home of Durins folk until the race of the Dwarves ended.

The First Hall was the first hall of Khazad-dûm on the eastern side of the Misty Mountains, above the Dimrill Dale. The East-gate of Moria led right into the First Hall, and from the First Hall was the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, which led to the Second Hall and the rest of the city.
