Elmo was an Elf of the Nelyar born at Cuiviénen. He was the younger brother of Elwë and Olwë, the two leaders of the great host of the Teleri. The parentage of the three brothers is unknown. Elmo joined the Great Journey following his brothers and remained behind in Beleriand after Elwë was lost in Nan Elmoth and Olwë departed for Valinor. After Elwë returned as Elu Thingol, Elmo became one of the Sindar of Doriath.[1]

Elmo is notable mainly for his descendants Celeborn and Nimloth, as no deeds are ascribed to him in the histories.[1] It is possible that he was a leader of the Eglath in the time between the departure of Olwë and the return of Elwë.

[edit] Other versions of the legendarium

Elmo was developed to explain the reference in The Silmarillion that Celeborn was a "kinsman of Thingol". One of the solutions was to establish Celeborn as the son of an unimportant brother of Thingol.

In other, later writings, Celeborn is made into a Falmarin Elf and a grandson of Olwë, but this idea was not further developed or published, possibly because it would cause Celeborn and Galadriel to become first cousins.
