Avarin is a term used to refer to the combined languages of the Avari.

History

There were at least six different languages, or dialects, in the Avarin group.[1] The various dialects did not have a common development,[2] although all descended from Primitive Quendian.[1]

Three larger divisions of Avarin are recorded: West Avarin, North Avarin and East Avarin. The West Avarin group was nearest to the Eldarin languages of the west; North Avarin was very peculiar, with no initial consonant groups. Not much is known of East Avarin.[2]

Etymology

Avarin is a Quenya word derived from the elements avar ("Refuser, Elf who did not journey to Aman") + in ("-ian, racial-adjective, language").[3]

Other versions of the legendarium

The West, North, and East Lemberin tongues was a name within the early versions of the legendarium for what would later be called the West, North, and East Avarin languages.[4] They were originally intended to have a resemblance in sound to Goidelic, Baltic, and Finnic languages.[5]

Early etymology

Lemberin is a Quenya word derived from the elements lembi ("Those That Lingered") + in ("-ian, racial-adjective, language").[6]
