Like his forefathers, he was raised by [[Elrond]] in [[Rivendell]] while his father [[Arathorn I]] dwelt in the wild. He became the [[Chieftain of the Dúnedain]] in 2848 [[Third Age|T.A.]], when his father was killed by wolves.
During Argonui's rule, in 2850, [[Gandalf]] entered [[Dol Guldur]] and discovered that it was [[Sauron]] who dwelt there and not one of the [[Nazgûl]]. Sauron is gathering all rings, news of the [[One Ring]] and of [[Isildur's Heir]] to him. He finds [[Thráin II]] who gives him the map and key before dieing. In 2851 Gandalf urged the [[White Council]] to attack Dol Guldur and drive out [[Sauron]] - [[Saruman]] over-ruled him.

Argonui's name is Sindarin and meaning "Valourious King" coming from the prefix ar- meaning "royal, king", and conui (from caun meaning valour, and ui an adjectival ending) becoming lenited to gonui meaning "valour". Conui can also be considered to mean "commanding".
