Anfalas, or Langstrand, was a coastal fief[1] between the rivers Lefnui and Morthond south of the Pinnath Gelin in the southwest of Gondor.[2]

History[edit | edit source]

During the reign of King Telumehtar the Corsairs of Umbar raided the coasts of Gondor as far as the Anfalas. As a consequence, King Telumehtar assembled his troops, conquered Umbar by storm[3] in T.A. 1810 and drove out the Corsairs[4].

During the War of the Ring Lord Golasgil led a long line of men of many sorts from Anfalas, hunters, herdsmen and men from little villages, which were scantily equipped, except the men of his household, to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.[5]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Anfalas is a Sindarin name,[6] which means "Long Beach"[7]. It consists of the elements and[8] and falas ("beach", "strand")[6][9][10]. It is also translated as Andafalasse in Quenya[11] and Langstrand in Westron ("translated" into English)[12]. Tolkien noted that the shortening of long to lang is very frequent in English place-names.[12]
