At the dawning of [[Númenor]]'s pride and power, [[Meneldur]] the King's Heir of that island Kingdom had a son whom he named Anardil. That Anardil grew up to rule as the famous sixth King of Númenor, who allied himself with [[Gil-galad]] and founded [[Númenor]]'s first footholds in [[Middle-earth]], though he ruled under the better known name of [[Tar-Aldarion]]. Three thousand years later, another Anardil became the sixth King of another realm - Anardil son of [[Eärendil]] succeeded his father to become the ruler of [[Gondor]].

Other versions of the legendarium

In The Peoples of Middle-earth, Section VII "The Heirs of Elendil", it was explained that three manuscripts existed in the textual history of this section. Manuscript A contained the Southern Line of Gondor, and appeared to be the first stage of composition. Manuscript B added the Northern Line, and began as a fair copy of A for the Southern line but became heavily emended. Manuscript B led to Manuscript C, a fine copy (but with later emendations), which led to a final typescript D. In the earlier Manuscripts A and B, Anardil lived from T.A. 132 to 407 instead of T.A. 136 to 411.[1]

Etymology

Anardil is Quenya for "Sun-friend".
