Aegnor was a son of Finarfin and a Lord of the Noldor. As recounted in The Shibboleth of Fëanor, he was terrible in battle, seemingly having a fire in his eyes, and his golden hair was stiff and straight. Even at a young age this was noticeable, though he was also known to be a very generous and noble spirit.

History

Aegnor was the elder brother of Galadriel and the younger brother of Finrod Felagund and Angrod. Together with Angrod he held the highlands of Dorthonion against Morgoth. Aegnor and Angrod were both slain in the Dagor Bragollach ("Battle of Sudden Flame").

Aegnor never married. He fell in love with the Bëorian woman Andreth, but because of the war did not make his intentions clear, and was killed soon after. It was partially his death that brought about the memorable conversation titled Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth.

Etymology

Aegnor's mother-name was Aikanáro, meaning "Fell Fire" in Quenya (from aica = "fell, dire", nár = "fire", and -o = pronominal suffix). Like many mother-names, his name was prophetic, a reference to his valiance in battle. His father-name was Ambaráto, meaning "Champion of Doom" (from ambar = "doom" and aráto = "champion"). Aegnor is the Sindarin version of his mother-name.

Other Versions of the Legendarium

Early writings refer to an Egnor, who in some stories a Gnome and father of Beren Erchamion, and in others a son of Finrod that fell during the Siege of Angband. It is quite possible that Egnor was a name for Aegnor in the earliest form of his development.
