Willowbottom was a small village near Woody End in the Eastfarthing of the Shire. It stood on the banks of the stream called Thistle Brook, just above the place where that stream flowed into the River Shirebourn.[1]

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The second element of the name is frequent in English placenames, and often appears as -botham (Old English botm "deep valley"). J.R.R. Tolkien gives the meaning of '"steep-sided valley" or especially a "deeplying flat"'.[2] See also Longbottom.
