[edit] Discussion

I would like to be discussed something generally.Read here.

[edit] A question

How many edits do i need to become autoconfirmed?--LordAndSaviourSauron 18:20, 20 February 2017 (UTC)

A question for User:Hyarion or User:Mith! :-) --Morgan 18:48, 20 February 2017 (UTC)
50, I think. It used be 10, but people were making spurious edits just to get to 10 edits. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:44, 26 February 2017 (UTC)
Ok--LordAndSaviourSauron 04:39, 28 February 2017 (UTC)

[edit] Orc names

User:LordAndSaviourSauron/Orc names[former link] I tried to figure out what the names of the orcs mean, and i apparently manage to figure out some. My question is, is it safe to add the etymologies in the articles? thank you--LordAndSaviourSauron 08:40, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

Meaning and etymologies of names in the legendarium (such as names of Orcs) should only be explained by references to Tolkien's works and/or linguistic sources by Tolkien scholars. The page on David Salo's blog is neither of these (it's a list of Orcish in The Hobbit films), and the information can therefore not be added to etymology sections in articles at Tolkien Gateway. Feel free, however, to work on the list on your personal page, as you already have done. Just let me know if you have further questions!--Morgan 10:06, 12 April 2017 (UTC)
I was mainly asking to add them on the pages of the orcs which appear only in the movies, but whatever--LordAndSaviourSauron 12:04, 12 April 2017 (UTC)

[edit] PE22 citation template

Hello there; would it be possible to create a citation template for Parma Eldalamberon 22? Template:PE says to comment here, and the templates only run through PE21. My suggestions:

PE|22 = J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Feanorian Alphabet, Part I and Quenya Verb Structure", in Parma Eldalamberon XXII (edited by Christopher Gilson and Arden R. Smith)

If you felt like doing subdivisions (which could be possible for some of the other PEs too), these would work:

22a = J.R.R. Tolkien, "The Feanorian Alphabet, Part I", in Parma Eldalamberon XXII (edited by Arden R. Smith)
22b = J.R.R. Tolkien, "Qenya Spelling", in Parma Eldalamberon XXII (edited by Christopher Gilson and Arden R. Smith)
22c = J.R.R. Tolkien, "Quenya Verb Structure", in Parma Eldalamberon XXII (edited by Christopher Gilson)
Unweg 04:40, 17 April 2017 (UTC)

Based on the above, the articles ANA and ant have refs which will need checking. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 06:44, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks, Unweg — I've added your suggestions to the template — and Mith. Unweg: if you feel confident about editing template pages, feel free to add subdivisions (or any other changes) yourself. The note about commenting on my talk page is mostly for users not knowing how to edit templates.--Morgan 12:37, 17 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks to both of you; I will do just that. Unweg 03:55, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

[edit] Obscure location

Hey!

I am working on this thing. Since there is a category for "Characters of unknown race", do you think that it would be useful to create a category for "Locations not appearing on maps" or "Locations appearing only on maps"? Sage 14:03, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

PS: whether you agree or not, feel free to make additions to that page. Sage 14:08, 6 November 2017 (UTC)
Hello Sage!
Indeed, I think it would be useful. At the time you first created the list, I wrote this (which perhaps you missed).--Morgan 18:56, 6 November 2017 (UTC)

[edit] DEFAULTSORT

Hi Morgan, should {{DEFAULTSORT}} be placed on redirect pages for Elvish terms? I created the page "Etyañgoldi" (meaning "Exiled Noldor") as a redirect to Exile of the Noldor, and I wasn't sure if I should add {{DEFAULTSORT:Etyangoldi}} to it. Thanks! Protospace 00:52, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi! I usually add a defaultsort for such spellings, especially if I also add a category to the redirect page.--Morgan 21:37, 25 March 2018 (UTC)

[edit] Middle-earτh Shadow of War

Hello. Can you upload at least one image related to the videogame Middle-earth Shadow of War?I don't have the ability to upload images on Tolkien Gateway but you do.

[edit] MERP

I saw on your collection that you have almost all the MERP modules. Mith has been bugging me by claiming that MERP modules are not an adaption and reverted at least one of my edits where I added MERP modules that contain information related to a page in TG and a short summary of what is in that module in the Other versions of the legendarium section. MERP has interesting information and if films and Computer games are usually permitted as adaptions in TG pages, then MERP should be permitted too. I could use some backup before re-reverting edits and explaining why MERP is an adaption and merits a link on TG pages. --Akhorahil 19:42, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

Could you point to a discussion of the issue, or to the page where it was reverted, so I can have a look? --Morgan 19:15, 19 November 2020 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. I am happy to provide you with a list of deletions and changes made by the user Mith that relate to information on MERP/MECCG products in Portrayal in adaptions sections of pages. Being 32 years old the user Mith is probably not familiar with MERP. However, just because MERP and MECCG adaptions are books and are older an a very well done fan made map in MERP's Fenlon style based on information from MERP does not make them "not an adaption" or less worth than computer games or the films, which are prominently shown in the Portrayals in adaptions sections on many pages. In fact the Information in MERP products is often much more detailed than in computer games or the films and the latter do not cover some of the geographic areas and cover a different period in time. The Edits by the user Mith are inconsistent and conflict with each other and are thus frustrating to the user who spent time and effort to look up the information and to do the edits. One one hand, the user Mith seems to complain that general and brief information is not detailed enough, because it does not tell him something ("This tells me nothing", "This isn't tellung us anything about the portrayal. This is just a list of things", "a trivial list") on the other hand he complains that it is too much ("this is too much", "trivial list too much as wasn't needed", "This article needs less MERP not more"). The user Mith cannot have the cake and eat it too. Either the information on what is in those MERP products relating to the Tolkien Gateway page (e.g. South Gondor, Ithilien, Dunland, etc.) is very detailed and tells you a lot how the geography, flora, fauna, settlements, people are portrayed in those MERP products or the information is brief and general and just a summary and if a reader wants to know more then the reader has to read those MERP modules (which can be found on the internet). I have respect for the authors of MERP which often had academic training in relevant fields. The micromanagement done by the user Mith is demotivating. There would be much more important work for users like Mith to check the sources on many prominent articles and to delete incorrect information or to disclose speculations as speculations other than exercising his personal opinion on what he considers an "adaption" or what he considers important. I see a lot of users spending their time to correct typos or grammar or fixing broken references. I also do such edits, but such edits are easy to do and are low hangig fruits. In my opinion, it is more important to check contents and the references for accuracy by reading the sources, deleting wrong statements and adding or correcting references, disclosing speculuative statements as such and providing the basis on which speculative statements are based. --Akhorahil 10:11, 20 November 2020 (UTC)

The user Mith deleted my references to MERP modules and brief descriptions of their content relating to Umbar on the Umbar page with the comment "This tells me nothing" in the Summary: box. http://www.tolkiengateway.net/w/index.php?title=Umbar&action=historysubmit&diff=323046&oldid=323027

The user Mith deleted my brief comments which hills, uplands, settlements, river and roads in Harondor are included in the the MERP module Southern Gondor: The Land, my comments that the map of Ithilien in the MERP module Sea-lords of Gondor shows that Haud-in-Gwânur is on the northern shore of the river Poros and is thus probably in Ithilien and not in Harondor and that the MEPR module Southern Gondor: The Land also mentions that Haud-in-Gwanûr is on the north bank of Athrad Poros, my comments that issue 20 of Other Minds contains an article about Harondor and a map of Harondor and my comments why the name (location) "Harondor" on the Middle-earth Collectible Card Game (MECCG) card for Haudh-in-Gwanûr was an error on the South Gondor page (= the page for Harondor) with the comment "A very big tidy, and reduced adaptions considerably. Ventured into a trivial list too much as wasn't needed" in the Summary: box. http://www.tolkiengateway.net/w/index.php?title=South_Gondor&action=historysubmit&diff=321732&oldid=321702
The user Mith deleted my comments that the role playing fan magazine Other Minds Issue 20 contains a map of Harondor that is based on the description of Harondor in the MERP module Southern Gondor: The Land and on the map of Northwestern Middle-earth in the MERP Northwestern Middle-earth Gazetteer on page 146 on the South Gondor page with the comment "Other Minds 20 is not an adaption" in the Summary: box(= the page for Harondor). http://www.tolkiengateway.net/w/index.php?title=South_Gondor&action=historysubmit&diff=323041&oldid=322774
The user Mith deleted my reference to a map that shows parts of Near Harad on the border to Harondor in the rople playing fan magazine Other Minds Issue 20 and comments on which information from which MERP products the map is based on the Near Harad page without any comment in the Summary: box. http://www.tolkiengateway.net/w/index.php?title=Near_Harad&action=historysubmit&diff=323044&oldid=322793

The user Mith deleted my explanation that the MERP Gorgoroth module also includes the names of two rivers and the names of three settlements and animals that occur in Nurn in Nurn on two maps.

The user Mith deleted a brief description of information about Ithilien that is contained in the MERP Southern Gondor: The Land module on the Ithilien page with the comment in the "Tidied up" Summary: box. http://www.tolkiengateway.net/w/index.php?title=Ithilien&action=historysubmit&diff=321750&oldid=321682
