Template talk:NM-chapters

From Tolkien Gateway

Nope[edit source]

Hi. I highly disagree with having this template and the idea of making an article for each chapter of TNOME, for several reasons: most of the chapters in this book are very very short, so I don't think it is worth it save for longer and important essays like Ósanwe-kenta. Articles so short with such a huge book template will look ridiculous, as already looks The Númenórean Catastrophe & End of "Physical" Aman[former link], and some of them can end falling out of fair use. Also, most of HoMe articles are still stubs, so I don't see the need of making this now (specially when TNOME needs to be explained in relation with HoMe). My proposal: delete this template, make articles about the important chapters, and maybe in the future we can make a template for those. --LorenzoCB 07:33, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]

When you put it like that I think you're right.Turiannerevarine 10:45, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I appreciate your intentions and work, tho :). I can't check now how long is The Númenórean Catastrophe & End of "Physical" Aman[former link], but maybe we can keep it; and it's great if we make more articles for TNOME chapters, but just without the template. --LorenzoCB 10:56, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you :). The chapter itself is literally 2-3 pages long, and that is due mainly to the editor's commentary. I think I will restore the chapter article, minus the template, because it IS a manuscript Tolkien wrote and ended up being published.Turiannerevarine 11:09, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Regarding the template though, I am leaving that in oblivion for now. Especially since several essays already have articles on here. I think we should just not bother with it, but that can be debated. I think the best way would be to have an infobox-like widget that would just have links to the previous and next chapters. But of course putting that on articles for existing essays would look strange, especially when they were not there before.Turiannerevarine 11:09, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Agree, we leave the template alone for a while and then we'll see what we do with it. About the articles about TNOME chapters, we should think how to present them. As many of them were published before or are just fragments of materials published elsewhere, I propose we present them as manuscripts per se and then explain the publication history in the introduction or in a separated section. --LorenzoCB 12:00, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That is probably the best approach. I rewrote the Catastrophe article to focus on the manuscript itself rather than as a chapter in NOME. Turiannerevarine 12:55, 18 October 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If we aren't creating articles for individual chapters, can we delete this template? --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 14:58, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
The idea is to create articles for the chapters worth of it. Do you think this template could work with those chapters? (This is: a selection instead of all the contents, and we indicate it). If so, can't the template be left here till then or is it problematic? --LorenzoCB 16:28, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I think only including some chapters looks a bit odd - it looks like we've missed some out. But then including them all is just too much and the template is too big anyway. So I'm conflicted. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 19:16, 30 December 2021 (UTC)Reply[reply]
