Roger Garland was an English artist, teacher and Tolkien illustrator.
History[edit | edit source]
Roger Garland attended Plymouth Art School and studied graphic design at the University of Wolverhampton, where he met his wife Linda Garland.[1] Both graduated in 1970.[1][2] Their son Seth Garland (born 1977) is also an artist. [3] After graduating, Garland taught art at the Poltair School in Cornwall for a decade, while also building a career as an illustrator.[1] His first collaboration with George Allen & Unwin was in 1981,[1] when he was hired to paint a cover for the paperback release of Unfinished Tales. In 1989, he co-founded Lakeside Gallery with his wife, which permanently displays their artwork, including Roger's Tolkien-related paintings, to this day.[1] In his opinion, The Lord of the Nazgûl is his best painting, because it "captures the darker side of these works".[4] He was also an honorary member of The Tolkien Society since 1994.[5]
