History[edit | edit source]

Hugo was the eldest child of Bruno Bracegirdle, born in S.R. 1350.[1] In his lifetime, he was notorious for borrowing books from Bilbo Baggins, though he rarely returned them. In S.R. 1401 he was a guest at Bilbo's Farewell Party, after which Bilbo left Hugo an empty bookcase in which he could store all those books.[2]

Inspiration[edit | edit source]

J.R.R. Tolkien likened himself to Hugo Bracegirdle.[3]

Portrayal in adaptations[edit | edit source]

2002: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (video game):

Hugo lives at Number Eight, Bagshot Row, a large house overlooking Sandyman's mill.
