Hill of Guard

From Tolkien Gateway

The Hill of Guard or Amon Tirith was the outlying hill on which Minas Tirith was built.[1] On its western side it was joined with Mount Mindolluin by a narrow shoulder which rose to the height of the fifth wall of the city.[2] It was originally called Amon Anor (S. 'Hill of the Sun')[3].

Etymology[edit | edit source]

Amon Tirith is the Sindarin[4] rendition of "Hill of Guard".[1] Paul Strack suggests that it is a combination of amon ("hill") and tirith ("watch", "guard").[4]
