Summary[edit | edit source]

This sketch by J.R.R. Tolkien was published in The Lord of the Rings 1977 Calendar. The illustration of Orthanc, the tower of Isengard, is one of several different conceptions sketched by J.R.R. Tolkien, but this agrees best with the description in The Two Towers, Book III, Chapter 8, The Road to Isengard:

'A peak and isle of rock it was, black and gleaming hard: four mighty piers of many-sided stone were welded into one, but near the summit they opened into gaping horns, their pinnacles sharp as the points of spears, keen-edged as knives.'
