Battle of the Heath of the Sky-roof

From Tolkien Gateway

The Battle of the Heath of the Sky-roof took place during the Faring Forth, the great expedition by the Elves of Tol Eressëa for the rescue of their lost kin in the Great Lands, according to the early version of the legendarium in some of the outlines for the continuation of The Book of Lost Tales.[1]

No full, detailed account of the battle is given, as it is only mentioned passingly in the Lost Tales.

History[edit | edit source]

It took place at the Heath of the Sky-roof, not far from Tavrobel, and was fought between two different groups of Men, following their invasion of Tol Eressëa. It ended in defeat for the Men friendly to the Elves, and the remaining Elves fled over the rivers Afros and Gruir, hoping to escape the invaders.[1]

According to one outline, the Mannish mariner Eriol witnessed the battle and ultimately fled with the Elves, and wrote the final words of the Golden Book in the ruins of Tavrobel.[2]

Following the battle, the last remnants of the Elves of Tol Eressëa and the Great Lands went into hiding, and eventually faded and ceased to be visible to most Men.[3]

Other names[edit | edit source]

The battle was also called the Battle of the High Heath,[2] as well as the Battle of the Heaven Roof, and the Battle of Dor-na-Dhaideloth.[4]
