Ancrene Wisse: The English Text of the Ancrene Riwle is an edition of the 13th-century religious text Ancrene Wisse, edited by J.R.R. Tolkien. It was published in 1962 by the Oxford University Press, commissioned by the Early English Text Society.
Ancrene Wisse (or Ancrene Riwle) is early Middle English for "Guide for Anchoresses", it is a set of rules written for the female religious recluses. There are several surviving manuscripts of this text, this volume is edited from one known as "MS CCCC 402"[note 1], which especially interested Tolkien.
The book includes a prefatory note by Tolkien, and an introduction by N.R. Ker.
