Apologies

I'm sorry again for what happened with Talk:Samwise Gamgee. It was a stupid decision of mine! I should have cleared it with you first. --DoctorWellington 02:08, 18 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Don't worry about it. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:00, 20 January 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Image Upload

Hi,

I was trying to upload better quality versions of some pictures, namely from Jackson's Fellowship of the Ring and Bakshi's The Lord of the Rings (of which I recently acquired a Blu-ray copy of), but I found no upload option anywhere. Is it some limitation for being a new user or am I missing the upload option? Thanks in advance. Alexrd 12:00, 22 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Yes, it is limited for new users. You will need to make a certain number of edits before you can upload. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 06:35, 25 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
That explains it then. Thanks. Alexrd 16:23, 25 March 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi again, quick question. When I'm uploading a better version of a picture, do I need to tag it for deletion so that the old versions can be removed later or it simply doesn't matter? Alexrd 15:44, 7 April 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
On an image page you can upload a new version of an image. The original one will be just be overwritten, and wherever it is used on the wiki it will also be overwritten. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 15:45, 7 April 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Yes, I was refering to the old versions listed at the bottom, once the new one is uploaded. Alexrd 15:48, 7 April 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
You cannot mark them for deletion, and they will be kept. At some point we may wish to revert to an older version, just as older revisions of an article are kept. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 15:50, 7 April 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Dwarf vandal

That guy doesn't seem to be getting the hint. Sadly, I can't check regularly - I'm on vacation till Tuesday. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 20:18, 28 April 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Don't worry about it. I think we might need to protect more pages but we'll see how we go! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 07:09, 29 April 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

GDPR

How are we for GDPR compliance? I've read it's more or less covered by the most recent MW update, but haven't been able to find any confirmation of that. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 18:01, 25 May 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Also, any chance of a SSL cert? Those things are becoming all the rage (and quite a necessity, SEO-wise) of late. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 17:56, 21 June 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
On both of these things I don't actually know: it's Hyarion's domain! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 17:33, 18 July 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Using citation templates on other wikis

Hello Mith. Would it be permissible or would it be inappropriate to copy Tolkien Gateway's citation templates for use on other Lord of the Rings-related wikis? -Sullathron(Talk)(Edits) 02:39, 13 July 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

With the appropriate credit in line with our copyright policy, sure! Although I would say to any editor that they should consider editing Tolkien Gateway as the most comprehensive Tolkien-specific wiki. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 17:35, 18 July 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks! How would I do that, just mention on the template page that it was copied from this wiki? -Sullathron(Talk)(Edits) 18:40, 19 July 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
However that particularly wiki usually does its copyright attribution. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 11:32, 21 July 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Question on Special:PopularPages

Hi, Mith! I'm new to Tolkien Gateway and an occasional editor on The One Wiki to Rule Them All. I was just wondering whether you'd know whether the Special:PopularPages page lists pageviews on a weekly, monthly, or lifetime basis. I noticed that the page itself does not specify that, so I'd be very grateful to you if you would be willing to satisfy my insatiable curiosity. Thanks in advance! :) --ShireHobbit 22:15, 21 July 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Lifetime, I believe. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 23:06, 21 July 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks! ShireHobbit 17:19, 23 July 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Infoboxes

Dear Mith, I'm a little new here (as in I-just-joined-like-9-hours-ago new) and I'm a little confused on how to create infoboxes. I cut and pasted the one on my homepage, but could you tell me how to do it from scratch? Thanks! Holdwine Meriadoc 00:52, 10 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Oh, oops. I just found it on the Community Portal page. *slams face on desk* Holdwine Meriadoc 00:52, 10 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Source Additions

Hey Mith, I've begun adding new citations to the article on the Ring Verse. Could you check it out and give me some feedback on it? Thanks!--Holdwine Meriadoc 16:37, 18 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

They look good to me! --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 10:08, 19 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I polished them up. Don't forget to reuse refs. --Ederchil (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 11:28, 19 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, thanks! --Holdwine Meriadoc 18:27, 19 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The urgent issue of Aragorn's & Arvegil's ages

I am very sad to see that you reverted out my addition of the extremely important,so far as purists/nitpickers are concerned, ambiguity in Arvegil's age and birth-year created by the revision of Aragorn's age in the most assiduously corrected editions of TLotR.Was this vanity for your own revision or did you have a real reason that you failed to disclose?12.144.5.2 00:40, 26 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

This isn't an urgent issue. But to answer your slightly rude suggestion, the reason it was reverted was because it both contained speculation and was without references; also, it came across a little irrelevant to the rest of the article, just dropped in a piece of trivia. --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 08:15, 26 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
"Without references"?...it relates to particularly cited text in Appendix A,and calls into question a great deal of the article's other content in a manner making "speculation" absolutely mandatory.(The "two hundred and ten" appears on page 1044 of the 50th Anniversary one-volume,but there are too many editions of TLotR to make any sense giving a page reference. It's the paragraph before the subhead for "Gondor and the Heirs of Anarion".)12.144.5.2 21:53, 27 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Edit Questions

Hi Mith, please forgive me if I come across as bothersome with my all of my questions, but I've noticed that whenever I edit a page, one of the same three questions always appears at the top of the edit box. I fully realize that those are there for security reasons (which is brilliant), but I feel like they're a little bit redundant and am a little bit worried about the level of security. Is it possible to maybe add a few more basic questions just to keep the edits safer? Again, sorry if this is a bother. --Holdwine Meriadoc 00:55, 10 December 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The short answer is no - those questions are very effective in filtering out spammers. But, you shouldn't be getting those questions at all: are you logged in when making those edits? --Mith (Talk/Contribs/Edits) 10:39, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
OK, I get it, Thank you! I used to get them even when I was logged in, but I guess that was before I was autoconfirmed. --Holdwine Meriadoc 16:09, 12 December 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
