Hobbit families[edit source]

Hello Chad. I have noticed that you had made some corrections on the birth order of some Hobbits. At some point I have been deleting references such as "only child" or "second son" or "only duaghter" etc, and I do when I am seeing then. The reason is that the Family trees in Appendix C are explicitly said to be simplified, implying that there were more children or siblings in some families. That is, if we see a family with 3 children, it is possible (but we can't know) that they had more, and the editor selected to write just those. So I don't think it is canonical to determine the number and order of children as we can never be sure for or against it. Unless of course it is explicitly mentioned in the text (eg. it is certain that Frodo was an only child). Sage (talk) 06:17, 2 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

No problem. I've only been changing wording which I know is wrong. The argument of more/fewer children is not what I'm stating, & I completely understand where you're coming from (especially when we know the same is true for royal lineages which mention only heirs.) Also... It may seem like I actively seek out things to fix. :-) I don't. I read T for at least 3 hours every day to solidify/refresh my knowledge. I'm on this site (& others) the entire time & only fix what I run across. This site is, in my expert opinion, by far the best out there. Chad in Texas (talk) 23:12, 2 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks for all your help Chad, and the kind words! At least we know that if we haven't seen any edits from Chad for a while, that's actually a good sign; he's still reading TG but just not finding any mistakes. ;) --Hyarion (talk) 04:37, 4 April 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Very true! I fixed that verb tense yesterday while I was hosting a Tolkien conference listening to a lecture & following along on TG!
I only make small changes because I'm not confident enough that I won't mess up the site by making large changes. (For example, the Cirth pages have problems, but I don't think I should mess with them.) I'm not even certain the best way to reach out for something large.
