The Tale of the Sun and Moon is the eighth chapter of The Book of Lost Tales Part One.

Summary

Eriol still desired limpë, the magical elven drink. Lindo explained that Eriol had to first see Lindo's visitor Gilfanon who was staying in the House of the Hundred Chimneys. Lindo told his story:

After the flight of Noldoli and slaughter of Solosimpi, elves and Valar were outraged. The Valar unsuccessfully tried to heal the Trees and save the light. Finally Vána, with the help of Yavanna, caused Laurelin to produce the fruit from which the Sun (Sári or Űr) was made; Urwendi then steered the Sun across the sky. Lórien caused Silpion to produce the rose from which the Moon (Rána or Sil) was made; Ilinsor then steered the Moon.
