Synopsis

"The Journey of Morwen and Nienor" by Alan Lee

When the Fell Winter ended, news had come to Menegroth about the Fall of Nargothrond, and it wasn't clear what had happened with Mormegil, but all survivors confirmed that he was indeed Túrin, son of Húrin. Thus Morwen demanded Thingol to join the exploraton party he was sending to Nargothrond, and not even Melian's advice convinced her to stay in Doriath, so Thingol refused to help her. However, she ordered her daughter Niënor to stay and left Thilgol's court alone. The King sent at once a party of ten men, lead by Mablung, to follow and escort her. When they met her at the north of the Aelin-uial, she accepted their help, but the next day she noticed there was an eleventh member in the escort: it was Niënor, who had joined them without they noticed. The mother ordered her daughter to come back, but this remained steadfast, showing the firmness of the House of Hador. Against her will, Morwen accepted Niënor to come with them, and Mablung feared what could come from their imprudence.

The party travelled west for four days until they reached Amon Ethir and Mablung's men started exploring the zone. They saw the fallen Doors of Felagund, but not the dragon, who had noticed the coming of the company. When Glaurung saw that there was a separated group in the top of Amon Ethir, he threw himself into the Narog, rising great clouds of steam. Then the escort of Morwen and Niënor saw the dragon coming into the hill and tried to run away with them. However, the poisoned air drove the horses mad, and Morwen's ran away with her into the mists, while she cried her daughter's name to never be seen again.

After falling from her horse, Niënor walked alone among the mist, and decided to go back to the top of the hill and wait for Mablung and his men. But when she reached there, the clouds dissipated and Glaurung appeared right in front of her. With his hipnotic eyes, the dragon fought against Niënor's will, but he was more strong and his enchantment falled into her mind. Nothing more did Glaurung, and leaved the hill while mocking Mablung.

Lamenting his failure, the captain headed back to Doriath when his men were reunited. After many days of travel, they were near the Crossings of the Taeglin and got confident, so they stopped for rest. Suddenly, a band of Orcs attacked them, and Niënor woke up like from a dream, and started running away. With a supernatural speed, she left behind Elves and Orcs like a steed, and disappeared among the woods.
