Talk:Battle of Dagorlad

There were two other battles in Dagorlad - in Third Age 1944 against the Wainriders, and later that year in the Battle of the Camp. You could also count the Battle of the Morannon, although that was south of Dagorlad. Therefore I am proposing a move. Should we move this page to "Battle of Dagorlad (I)" or "First Battle of Dagorlad"? "Battle of the Camp" could stay as it is, but there are no pages for the second Battle of Dagorlad, in which case it would be named according to the conventions implemented here. --Narfil Palùrfalas 13:27, 5 July 2007 (EDT)

I think in all probability most people would never have heard about the 'second' battle of dagorlad- certainly i cant remember it. From that stand point i would be very dubious about any renaming of the *main* battle of Dagorlad page. Is the "second" battle of Dagorlad actually named the battle of Dagorlad? If not the logical choice would be to give it a 'non-canon' name (like has happened with Sack of Bar-en-Danwedh and Massacre at Tarn Aeluin) and make sure it is suitably linked up to all notable participants/peoples/locations etc. If it was called the Battle of Dagorlad then i think it's best placed as a section of the main Battle of Dagorlad page. Hey guys I haven't been editing much lately but I thought I would reply to this.

It does not need to be moved. The "first" Battle of Dagorlad is synonymous with Dagorlad. So I give a big no.--Dwarf Lord 00:07, 6 July 2007 (EDT)

Participating forces[edit source]

The published Silmarillion (in the Chapter "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age") states that except for Elves, some beings of every kind - even animals - were present in both hosts during this battle. I support not going with the literal interpretation of every kind of being (especially orcs, trolls, werewolves and dragons) fighting on both sides for this article. But if the beasts and birds appear under the "Strength" section of the Last Alliance, they should be listed as such for the hosts of Mordor as well; having "beasts and birds" on one side and "evil creatures" on the other does not represent the text well, in my opinion. The text is highlighting Elves as the exception, the only kind that does not serve Sauron in any way. But reading this overview, one might come to the conclusion that the beasts and birds are also united while Sauron is fielding nebulous "evil creatures". I propose using the same nouns to describe these kinds on both sides, optionally with the ones in the hosts of Mordor additionally described as evil.
