Hollin.mp3<br />
Eregion (S, pron. [eˈreɡjon]) or Hollin was a realm of the Noldor in Eriador during the Second Age, located near the Walls of Moria, under the shadow of the Misty Mountains. It was the only lasting Noldorin realm outside Lindon.<br />
==History==<br />
After the end of the First Age, most of the Noldor who remained in Middle-earth dwelt in Lindon under the rule of Gil-galad, their High King. After some seven centuries, Celebrimbor, the grandson of Fëanor, chose to depart from Lindon and passed eastward, drawn by the promise of mithril in the mines of the Dwarves. These elves followed Celebrimbor and founded Eregion. It's capital, Ost-in-Edhil, was founded in 750. It was at this time that Galadriel and Celeborn travel from Lake Nenuial and settle in Eregion for a while. <br />
<br />
The Elves of Eregion lived in harmony with a Dwarven civilization, trading freely with their kingdom of Khazad-dûm. A high road ran from Ost-in-Edhil to Khazad-dûm, and an unprecedented friendship between the two races began in that time. Within the Elves of Eregion, an important society or guild of craftsmen emerged with Celebrimbor as its leader. These were the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, the People of the Jewel-smiths, and their work was said to be the greatest to be seen since the time of Fëanor.<br />
<br />
In 1200, the Elves of Eregion became friends with Sauron, under the guise of Annatar, the "Lord of Gifts". After "Annatar" taught and assisted the Gwaith-i-Mirdain with creating the Rings of Power, he left Eregion. Celebrimbor's smiths proceeded then to forge Three more on their own with the knowledge already gained from him. Their forging was completed by around 1590. Annatar didn't learn about them, and they were "unsullied", free from Sauron's corrupting influence.<br />
<br />
When Sauron created the One Ring in 1600, the Elves who wore the Rings of Power heard his voice and realized they had been deceived. In 1693, Celebrimbor sent his three rings away for safekeeping: he gave Nenya to Galadriel in Lothlórien, who advised him to send the other two to Lindon, away from Sauron, so he gave Vilya to High King Gil-galad and Narya to Círdan.<br />
<br />
The Elves of Eregion did not stand alone against Sauron. From Lindon, Gil-galad sent a force commanded by Elrond to lend them aid. Before Elrond could come to Eregion, the Dark Lord demanded that the Rings of Power be turned over to him, and when he was refused he brought his full force against Eregion. In 1697, Ost-in-Edhil fell, with Celebrimbor himself leading a last desperate defence on the steps of the Jewel-smiths' guild house. He was taken captive by the Orcs, then shot through with Orc-arrows, and by some accounts, Sauron used Celebrimbor's body as a banner as he turned to face Elrond's army approaching from the north.<br />
<br />
Sauron gathered up the Rings of Power that remained, and laid waste the land of Eregion, bringing an end to its people. The surviving Elves of Eregion seem to have scattered, as there are various accounts of their fates. Some fled northward to join Elrond's host, and that host was itself forced into retreat; some of these Elves of Eregion settled at Rivendell when Elrond founded it shortly afterwards. They were joined there by others of their kind who had escaped into the Wild, and only later found their way to safety. Many of these people seem to have later abandoned Middle-earth and sailed into the West.<br />
<br />
==Etymology==<br />
The name Eregion is Sindarin for "Land of Holly" (the word ereg means "holly").<br />
<br />
Hollin (from hollin-land) is an old form, still used locally, of "holly"; the region abounded in holly-trees.<br />
<br />
==In Other Versions of the Legendarium==<br />
In the Unfinished Tales it is stated that "Celeborn and Galadriel therefore went eastwards, about the year 700 of the Second Age, and established the (primarily but by no means solely) Noldorin realm of Eregion." This contradicts the information published in The Lord of the Rings which gives the founding of Eregion in the year 750. It is possible to reconcile the texts if 700 is seen as the year of their moving eastwards with 750 as the year of the foundation of Eregion; the canonicity of this, however, is unknown.<br />

}}Dior was the son of Beren and Lúthien, and the grandson and heir to the throne of Elu Thingol, King of Doriath. Dior was one of the Half-elven. <br />
<br />
==History==<br />
Dior was born on the island of Tol Galen in East Beleriand. When he was 27, he married Nimloth of Doriath, and took her back to live by the Lanthir Lamath waterfall at the base of the Blue Mountains. There they had three children: Elwing, Eluréd, and Elurín. <br />
<br />
After Thingol was slain by the Dwarves who coveted the Nauglamír, Dior with his father and a host of Green-elves of Ossiriand journeyed swiftly north to the river Ascar and fought the Dwarves of Nogrod in the Battle of Sarn Athrad.<br />
<br />
In 503, he and his family went to Menegroth and restored the realm of Doriath. After the death of his parents, a Lord of the Laiquendi came to Doriath bringing the Nauglamir, which was worn by his mother. After mourning, he decided to wear it himself. When he placed the Nauglamir on himself, it sat lightly and he appeared as the fairest of three living races: Maiar, Elven, and Human. This news came to the Sons of Feanor, who came to Doriath with their servants, consumed by the Oath of Feanor.<br />
<br />
Dior managed to kill Celegorm (who, ironically, was also called the Fair), and Caranthir and Curufin were also slain, but the Kingdom of Doriath was destroyed. So Dior and Nimloth were slain, during the Second Kinslaying, along with anyone preventing the Feanorians from gaining the Silmaril. <br />
<br />
After the attack, the servants of Celegorm left Eluréd and Elurín in the forest to die. Elwing, however, carrying the Nauglamir, escaped with the remnant of the Elves of Doriath to the Havens of Sirion. Years later she would wed Eärendil and together they would seek aid from Valinor.<br />

<hr />
<div>== Eregion? ==<br />
<br />
I don't think we can reconcile SA 700 and SA 750 as the time Galadriel and Celeborn took to move eastwards because at the time of SA 700, Eregion was not even a thought so its impossible for Galadriel and Celeborn to have moved to Eregion at SA 700 if it didn't even exist. So since we can't reconcile the two dates, I believe that we should take Eregion's founding as SA 750 and Galadriel moving eastwards to settle Eregion also at this time since this is the account from the Lord of the Rings. To simplify this, I believe SA 700 should be a date which has no relevance in the history of Galadriel and Celeborn. After the Chaining of Melkor, the Vala Oromë took three Elves, Ingwë, Finwë, and Elwë, to Valinor to convince the Elves to join the Valar in the Blessed Realm. Upon their return, the Elven ambassadors convinced many to join them on the Great Journey to the West. During the thousand mile journey, the Elven host separated into three groups, the Vanyar, the Noldor, and the Teleri.<br />
<br />
The Teleri, led by Elwë and his brother Olwë, were the largest and the slowest group, and were the last to reach the western shores of Middle-earth. The Noldorin Elves had already left for Valinor, and the Teleri were forced to wait for a time in Middle-earth.<br />
<br />
During this time Elwë wandered into the Forest of Nan Elmoth, where he met and fell in love with Melian the Maia. Caught in an enchantment of their own making, Elwë and Melian could not be found by the searching Teleri. When the Valar returned to take the remaining Elves to Valinor, only some of them followed Olwë across the Great Sea. The rest had come to love the lands of Beleriand and refused to leave without their missing lord.<br />

===King of Doriath===<br />
[[Image:J.R.R. Tolkien - Elwe Heraldic Device.jpg|100px|thumb|right|Thingol's device by [[J.R.R. While he had been fair and noble before, he now stood like a Maia above them as the tallest of the Children of Ilúvatar. He gathered his people together and founded the Kingdom of Doriath. His subjects would become the Sindar, or the "Grey Elves", and their language was Sindarin. From then on Elwë was known as King Elu Thingol, and he claimed lordship over all the lands in Beleriand. While Thingol was King of the Grey Elves, who never saw the light of the Two Trees, as an Ambassador of the Valar he was counted as a High Elf, and equal to any lord of the Eldar.<br />

A thousand years before the first rising of the Sun and the Moon the Green-elves entered Beleriand under Denethor. King Thingol's relations with the Noldor were strained, and grew worse decades later when he learned the truth of the Kinslaying at Alqualondë. ===The Quest for the Silmaril===<br />
<br />
Thingol and Melian had one child, a daughter named Lúthien, said to be the fairest woman ever to live. Lúthien fell in love with a Man named Beren. Thingol did not wish for the two to wed, as he valued his daughter very highly and disliked Men. As a bride-price he asked for a Silmaril from the crown of Morgoth, thinking there was no way that Beren could fulfill this demand.<br />

However, when Beren and Lúthien came back from Angband, and when Beren showed him his missing hand which still held the Silmaril in the belly of Carcharoth, he softened his heart towards him. Soon, though, Carcharoth in his anguish and rage from the Silmaril that burned his insides, broke through the Girdle of Melian and entered Doriath. In that hour, Thingol, along with Beren, Mablung, Beleg and Huan the Hound of Valinor, began the hunt of the Wolf. Carcharoth was finally slain by Huan, but both Huan and Beren died in the process. After that, Lúthien died also, and coming to the Halls of Mandos she begged Mandos that Beren be returned to life. He hired some Dwarven craftsmen to do it for him. But by the time the Dwarves were finished they had become obsessed with the Nauglamír and asked for it as a payment for their labor. This infuriated Thingol, who had also grown obsessed with the jewelry and refused to give it as a payment, realizing they were coveting the Silmaril. Because Haleth did not marry and had no children, her brother's son Haldan became the first Lord of Brethil.<br />
<br />
After the Dagor Bragollach, and the capture of Minas Tirith, Orcs began to roam unhindered across the lands of West Beleriand. Halmir, son of Haldan, called on the aid of King Thingol, who sent many stout Sindarin warriors under the command of Beleg to his aid. Together, Halmir and Beleg destroyed a legion of invading Orcs, and gave the southern lands a respite from the defeats in the north. <br />
<br />
Haldir joined the Union of Maedhros and led a force of the Haladin in the disastrous Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Fingon attempted a retreat across Anfauglith covered by Haldir, but he was slain, with most of his Men. <br />
<br />
After this, the Haladin had relative peace in their woods for more than twenty years, until a sudden assault by Orcs. Handir set out to defeat them, but his men were defeated and he himself was slain. <br />
<br />
Soon after Brandir's succession, Túrin came to Brethil, and began before long to take control of the Haladin himself. After the death of Glaurung, Brandir was slain in anger by Túrin.<br />

<div>Where do we get the information in the "Third Age Easterlings" section from? That goes by the movie, not the book. Besides, there are no scources on this page. Carter938<br />
<br />
I think we could use some of the information from Frodo's vision on Amon Hen where he sees Easterling armies composed of "swordsmen, spearmen, bowmen upon horses, chariots of cheiftains and laden wains" etc. This actually gives us info on what kinds of weapons and troops some Easterlings used (infantry wielding swords and spears, mounted archers, charioteers). Unsignedanon<br />
<br />
== Inspiration ==<br />
<br />
I think the information currently given here (that the Easterlings were inspired by the people of central and East Asia) isn't supported by the text, and might be influenced by movie imagery. It seems more likely that they were inspired by Slavic, Hunnic, and Turkic peoples, the peoples living east of the lands settled by Germanic-speaking peoples in the Migration Period. This can probably be supported by the text; Vinitharia's name for example, = 'Wend-fighter'; comparing the descriptions of the Balchoth and Wainriders to descriptions of invaders from the East of Germanic lands. Librán-Moreno's paper 'Byzantium, New Rome!' could probably supply some secondary support for anyone willing to take it on.198.161.230.12<br />
<br />
:Thanks for pointing out this section: as it stands now, it contains no references and seems to be speculation. I'll remove it. Feel free to write a new section if you find scholarly and/or primary sources to support any inspiration behind the concept of Easterlings.--Morgan 18:26, 1 September 2016 (UTC)<br />
<br />
== Merge? ==<br />
<br />
I think it would be more productive to merge both easterling pages into one page... it would be easier for the reader to look at one page and gather information about the same people because the easterling of the first age are the same ones of the second age and beyond, more specifically the ones that appear in the LOTR series. Celebrimbor (S, pron. [ˌkɛlɛˈbrɪmbɔr]) was the son of Curufin, fifth son of Fëanor. Aside from his grandfather, Celebrimbor was the greatest craftsman in the history of Middle-earth, and his forging of the Rings of Power led to the dominion and eventual downfall of Sauron in the War of the Ring.<br />
<br />
==History==<br />
=== Early life ===<br />
<br />
The early years of Celebrimbor are not known, but he was born in Valinor (and followed his father and grandfather into the Exile of the Noldor in Middle-earth. His mother stayed behind.<br />
<br />
He probably fled to Nargothrond after the Dagor Bragollach. However, he took no part in the deeds of Curufin and Celegorm regarding Lúthien, Beren, and Finrod. He even repudiated his father's deeds and did not follow him when the two brothers were cast out from Nargothrond by Orodreth. <br />
<br />
After the Sack of Nargothrond, Celebrimbor lived for a time in Gondolin, where he was a great jewel smith for King Turgon. He may have created the Elessar of Eärendil, though other accounts name Enerdhil as the Master Jewelsmith and creator of the Elfstone, who perhaps taught Celebrimbor this art.<br />
<br />
A legend says that during the Second Age Celebrimbor was in love with Galadriel who was pained at the state of Middle-earth. Celebrimbor remade another version of the Elessar at her behest, with less power than the original.<br />
<br />
During the Second Age, he was lord of the elves of Ost-in-Edhil in Eregion. He was also the head of the Gwaith-i-Mírdain, a guild of elven craftsmen. Their skill was so renowned that they gained the admiration and friendship of the Dwarves of Khazad-dûm. Together with the dwarf Narvi, Celebrimbor crafted the Doors of Durin that guarded the West-gate of the Dwarven kingdom.<br />
<br />
=== The Rings of Power ===<br />
Around 1200 a Maia craftsman called Annatar (the "Lord of Gifts") arrived at Ost-in-Edhil as an emissary of the Valar, offering his knowledge to the Gwaith-i-Mírdain. This was Sauron, who had come to subvert the elves. <br />
<br />
Under the guidance and instruction of Annatar, Celebrimbor and the Gwaith-i-Mírdain made several lesser and 16 more powerful rings. A legend says that Celebrimbor gave one of those rings to King Durin III who reigned in Khazad-dûm<br />
<br />
Based on knowledge gained from Annatar, Celebrimbor also created by himself Three Rings, the greatest and fairest of the Rings of Power. These rings were thus free of Sauron's corrupting influence, for only Celebrimbor himself touched them. Celebrimbor named the rings Vilya, Narya, and Nenya after the principal Middle-earth elements of air, fire, and water, respectively.<br />
<br />
Around 1600, Sauron secretly forged the One Ring in Orodruin, which would enable him to rule Middle-earth by claiming dominance over all the Rings of Power and their bearers. Celebrimbor and the Elves felt betrayed when they wore the Rings and defied Sauron by withholding the other rings from him. Celebrimbor then sent the three rings away for safekeeping: Vilya and Narya to Gil-galad and Círdan, respectively, in Lindon, and Nenya to Galadriel in Lothlórien. He then prepared for war.<br />
<br />
===Fight against Sauron and death===<br />
Sauron retaliated by attacking Eregion in 1695, laying waste to the realm. Celebrimbor was captured in the Sack of Eregion, and was forced under torture to disclose where the sixteen were held, but he would not reveal the whereabouts of the three elvish rings. Sauron captured the other rings and used them as instruments of evil in later years, particularly against Men. <br />
<br />
Celebrimbor died from his torment in 1697, the last direct descendant of the line of Fëanor. His body, shot with arrows, was hung upon a pole and carried by the forces of Sauron as a banner as they assaulted the Elves.<br />

== Etymology ==<br />
The name Celebrimbor is the Sindarin translation of his Quenya father-name Telperinquar (pron. [ˌtelpeˈriŋʷkʷar]). His mother-name is unknown. Celebrimbor consists of celebrin ("silver-like") + baur ("fist").<br />
<br />
== Other versions of the legendarium ==<br />
Celebrimbor was invented for the back-story of the Lord of the Rings with no background in the first edition (before 1966); afterwards Tolkien attempted to write a background to link him with the Elder Days: in a passage concerning Galadriel and Celeborn he was described as a Noldo survivor of Gondolin, who had been one of Turgon's greatest artificers. He was prideful and had an almost "dwarvish" obsession with crafts, survived the Fall and later became a follower of Celeborn and Galadriel. However, in a note Tolkien put next to the text, he wrote, "it would be better 'to make him a descendant of Fëanor'." <br />
<br />
Thus, an appropriate line is added in the Appendix B of the second edition. Tolkien then proceeded to decide which of Fëanor's sons would result to Celebrimbor; a note describes their wives and children, stating that, Maelor, Caranthir and Curufin were wedded, concluding that "Curufin, dearest to his father and chief inheritor of his father's skills, [...] had a son who came with him into exile, though his wife (unnamed) did not." Christopher Tolkien used this note as a basis for The Silmarillion, where Celebrimbor is the son of Curufin who remained in Nargothrond when his father was expelled. <br />
<br />
However, apparently forgetting the published statement, Tolkien explored other ideas; in an essay dated 1968 Celebrimbor is referred as a Telerin silver-smith who followed Celeborn to Middle-earth, and ended up to Eregion being fascinated by the silver-like mithril. In Of Dwarves and Men (1969 or later) he mentions that he was a Sinda and descendant of Daeron of Doriath who continued to use his runic script in Eregion.297<br />

<br />
The Avari (Q: "unwilling"; or "the Refusers") were a branch of Elves that refused to make the Great Journey.<br />
<br />
==History==<br />
===Origins===<br />
The original Elves that awakened in Cuiviénen numbered 144, and they were divided into three clans: the Minyar, which had 14 members; the Tatyar, which had 56 members; and the Nelyar (or Lindar), which had 74 members. After the Vala Oromë invited the Elves to live in Valinor, the Elves entered into a great debate on whether to follow Oromë into the west. Most of the Elves were persuaded to undertake this Great Journey, including all of the Minyar, half of the Tatyar, and 46 of the Nelyar. These Elves became known collectively as the Eldar, and their clans became known by new names: the Minyar Eldar were called the Vanyar, the Tatyar Eldar were called the Noldor, and the Nelyar Eldar were called the Teleri.<br />
<br />
Those Elves who refused to take the Great Journey were called the Avari, and they were not counted among the Eldar. Their initial population had 56 members; consisting of 28 (half) of the Tatyar and 28 of the Nelyar, the latter of whom maybe were called Lindai. Some of them, especially those who dwelt furthest from the waters of Cuiviénen and wandered in the hills, had not seen Oromë at his first coming, and knew only vague, fearful rumours of the Valar; lies of Melkor concerning Oromë and Nahar perhaps had a role. Many thus refused to depart from their own lands, and spread gradually throughout the wide lands of Middle-earth. According to a tradition, their leaders were Morwë of the Tatyar and Nurwë of the Nelyar. They were after known by the name "the Unwilling" because they refused the summons.<br />
<br />
===Early History===<br />
Some of the Avari, it is said, were corrupted by Melkor in ancient days to become the progenitors of the race of Orcs.<br />
<br />
Over time, many Avari wandered westwards. Some mingled with the Nandor of the Vales of Anduin, and others entered Eriador. Some time after the Laiquendi settled in Beleriand, some Avari "crept in small and secret groups into Beleriand from the South." Most of these Avari remained secretive and isolated from the other elves, living in caves and deep in the forests. They viewed the Eldar with jealousy and disdain, believing that the Eldar were deserters, and they treated the Eldar with hostility and treachery. They especially disliked the exiled Noldor who returned from Aman. Rarely, an Avar was accepted into Sindarin society. Outside of Beleriand, in Eriador and the Vales of Anduin, some Avari and Eldar eventually established friendlier relations. <br />
<br />
The Edain who travelled to the West first met the Avari of all the Elves, and were taught from their language, which influenced theirs. They taught them many of the basic crafts of civilization, though the craft of the Eldar surpassed that of the Avari, even more than that of the Avari surpassed primitive Men.<br />
<br />
===Later History===<br />
Some Avari after the end of the First Age started to mingle with the scattered Nandor beyond the Misty Mountains and they became hardly distinguishable from them, afterwards known as Silvan Elves.<br />
<br />
It is told that no Avari Elves were to be found west of the Misty Mountains during the late Third Age.<br />
<br />
==Culture==<br />
===Tribes===<br />
Six tribes of Avari are mentioned in the Third Age, and their names are all cognates of the Primitive Quendian word Kwendî (the Speakers): Kindi, Cuind, Hwenti, Windan, Kinn-lai, Penni.<br />
<br />
===Languages===<br />
Avarin<br />
The Avari had many tribes and greatly varied languages, widely sundered from one another. The names above are the only certain Avarin words ever mentioned by the Loremasters. <br />
<br />
It is also possible that the name Eöl is an Avarin one.<br />
<br />
It is speculated also that Dorwinion was an Avarin land.<br />
<br />
==Names==<br />
The Avari were called Abari in Telerin; they were also called Moripendi (an equivalent of Quenya Moriquendi which referred to the Sindar as well).<br />
<br />
In Sindarin they were called Evair, Morben or Mornedhel.<br />
<br />
The term Dark Elves usually referred to the Avari. In the period of the Exile of the Noldor, "Dark Elves" referred to the Elves of Middle-earth other than the Noldor and the Sindar, thus being equivalent to the Avari.<br />
<br />
==Other versions of the legendarium==<br />
In older versions of the legendarium, the name Avari was originally that of the later Eldar, then meaning "those that departed".<br />
<br />
In other, relatively late writings, a brief idea was that the Avari did not come from the three clans, but from two other clans, led by Nurwë and Morwë. This idea was later dropped. In the final conception, the Elves were divided into three tribes.<br />

There were many battles between the Elves of Beleriand and the forces of Morgoth in the centuries making up the First Age.<br />
<br />
These battles are often referred to as the Wars of Beleriand or Battles of Beleriand, but also as the War of the Jewels as the Silmarilli were behind them all but the First Battle of Beleriand.<br />
<br />
== Significant Battles ==<br />
<br />
The following are the major battles in this long, extended conflict. Morgoth ever used Angband as a mighty fortress and the base from which to launch his devastating attacks. While the Noldor had their victories, the Doom of Mandos always hung over their efforts. Many Men fell in these battles on both sides, and for a long time after the Elves had scorn for the Houses who supported Morgoth.<br />
<br />
#The First Battle of Beleriand was fought before the Noldor arrived, and was fought by the Sindar, Laiquendi, and Dwarves of the Blue Mountains.<br />
#The Second Battle was the Dagor-nuin-Giliath, or Battle-under-Stars, fought by the Noldor following Fëanor and his Seven Sons.<br />
#*During this battle the Battle of the Lammoth was fought by the host of Fingolfin.<br />
#The Third Battle was the Dagor Aglareb, or Glorious Battle, which led to the Siege of Angband.<br />
#*Various minor battles were fought during the Siege which are not counted among the majors.<br />
#The Fourth Battle was the disastrous Dagor Bragollach, or Battle of Sudden Flame, in which Ard-galen burned and many Noldor, including Fingolfin, were slain.<br />
#The Fifth Battle was the Nirnaeth Arnoediad or Battle of Unnumbered Tears, in which the Union of Maedhros was utterly broken by Morgoth.<br />
#*The Fall of the Falas, in which the havens of Brithombar and Eglarest were sacked and fell, took place after the Nírnaeth.<br />
#*The Sack of Nargothrond, where the city was destroyed by Glaurung and his Orcs.<br />
#*The Fall of Gondolin, in which Morgoth's hosts besieged and destroyed the Noldor and their citadel of Gondolin, killing King Turgon.<br />
#The Sixth and Last Battle of Beleriand was the War of Wrath, which defeated Morgoth, ended the First Age of Arda and destroyed most of Beleriand.<br />
#*The Battle of Eglarest, in which Ingwion and his host of Vanyar landed in Eglarest and defeated the Orcs who held the Haven.<br />

<br />
Gondolin (S, pron. [ˈɡondolin]; First Age c. 126 – 510, existed c. 384 years), the great Hidden City of Turgon was concealed from friend and foe alike during the First Age by the Encircling Mountains, and guarded from trespassers by the Eagles of Thorondor.<br />
<br />
In the fiftieth year of the First Age, Turgon journeyed from his halls in Nevrast with his cousin Finrod. Ulmo guided him to the hidden valley of Tumladen, and there he founded Gondolin. The city was completed circa 116, and Turgon's people who had dwelt in Nevrast travelled there secretly.<br />
<br />
The city was inviolate for almost four hundred years; Turgon did not break his secret leaguer until the time of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad in 472, and even after that disastrous battle he was able to return in secret to the city with the aid of Húrin Thalion.<br />
<br />
Morgoth's servants finally discovered Gondolin through the treachery of Maeglin, and it was sacked in 510 (Main article: the Fall of Gondolin). Turgon was lost in the Fall of the city, but some few (including Tuor and Idril, with their child Eärendil) escaped the destruction and dwelt as Exiles at the Mouths of Sirion.<br />

<br />
=== The Building of Gondolin ===<br />
The round valley of Tumladen, within the Encircling Mountains, had originally been a lake, and in its centre stood a hill that had once been an island: Amon Gwareth. It was here that Turgon decided to found his Hidden City, as a memorial to ancient Tirion that lay beyond the Great Sea.<br />
<br />
The first building of the city took fifty-two years to complete. After this time, the people of Turgon, a great number of Noldor and Sindar, traveled from Nevrast, where they had dwelt, and secretly entered the valley of Tumladen. Turgon gave his city the name Ondolindë (Quenya for "The Rock of the Music of Water", because of the fountains of Amon Gwareth), but in Sindarin this was rendered Gondolin, the Hidden Rock.<br />
<br />
After their arrival in the new city, the Gondolindrim continued to labour in its building, until it was said to rival even Tirion itself. Its walls stood high and white above the plain, and its most prominent feature was the great Tower of the King, where, among the fountains, Turgon himself made Glingal and Belthil, trees of gold and silver made in memory of the Two Trees of Valinor.<br />
<br />
=== The Coming of Maeglin ===<br />
There followed two centuries of happy peace: Morgoth was besieged in the far north of the world, and the people of Gondolin lived undisturbed by the events outside their fair city. At last, though, a seed of discontent appeared: King Turgon's sister Aredhel determined to leave the city, much against Turgon's wishes, and journey into Middle-earth. Soon after her departure, her guards returned, and reported that they had lost her in the dark and sorcerous region to the south east of the city, known as Nan Dungortheb.<br />
<br />
More than twenty years then passed, and then suddenly Aredhel returned. With her was one who she claimed to be Maeglin, her son by Eöl the Dark Elf of Nan Elmoth. This Maeglin accepted Turgon as lord, but his father Eöl had followed his wife and son to Gondolin and been captured at the entranceway. He was brought before Turgon. Eöl refused to submit to Turgon's authority, and instead chose death for himself and his unwilling son. He threw a poisoned dart to slay Maeglin, but instead struck Aredhel, who fell ill with the poison and died. The body of Eöl was broken on the Caragdûr for this.<br />
<br />
Maeglin, though, had had no part in these evils, and Turgon accepted him, and he grew to be among the great in Gondolin, wise in council, cunning in smithcraft and mighty in battle.<br />
<br />
=== Two Great Battles ===<br />
For more than a hundred years after the deaths of Aredhel and Eöl, Gondolin again had peace. The time was coming, though, when Morgoth would break the Siege of Angband, and the unstoppable doom of the Elves would fall upon them. One winter's night, the fires of Angband destroyed the league of the Noldor: the Dagor Bragollach. In this disaster, the people of Gondolin played no immediate part.<br />
<br />
They were drawn into the events of those years, though, when two young brothers of the race of Men, Húrin and Huor, were cut off from their army and became lost amid the feet of the Crissaegrim. Thorondor brought them to Turgon. At the bidding of Ulmo, Turgon accepted them, and they remained in Gondolin for almost a year, when they returned to their homes. In this kindly act were the first seeds of Gondolin's destruction, more than fifty years later.<br />
<br />
Turgon now devised a new policy for the salvation of the Elves: he began secretly to send his people out westward across the great sea, to seek the land of the Valar and ask their pardon and aid. None of his mariners succeeded, but this was a wise course, though Turgon never knew it: he was lost long before his grandson Eärendil, aided by a Silmaril, finally succeeded in this task.<br />
<br />
As time passed since the destruction of the Dagor Bragollach, the Elves of Beleriand began to arm for a counterstroke, and Turgon secretly began his own preparations. Fourteen years after the breaking of the Siege of Angband, and some three hundred and fifty since the completion of Gondolin, Turgon rode for the first time to war. Unknown and unbidden by his kin, he rode to their aid with an army of ten thousand. This was to be the great battle that was to become known as the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.<br />
<br />
===Gondolin's Decline===<br />
<br />
<br />
Morgoth poured much of his strength and resources into discovering the location of the Hidden City, and his spies infested lands about the Encircling Mountains and wherever he could penetrate. After Nargothrond fell, Gondolin was the last great stronghold of the Noldor. The unbidden coming of Maeglin precipitated the destruction of the great city.<br />
<br />
The first great blow to the security of Gondolin came by accident. Húrin, who was once held captive by Morgoth, was released to wander in the world, unconsciously furthering the Dark Lord's cause. He came to the edge of the Mountains, hoping that an Eagle would bear him to Gondolin. But Turgon, afraid for the lives of those in his city, and rightfully fearing what Morgoth might have done to Húrin, withheld rescue for too long. Húrin, seeing nothing, cried out in a loud voice "Turgon, Turgon, remember the Fen of Serech! O Turgon, will you not hear in your hidden halls?". Morgoth now knew the general area in which Gondolin lay, for his spies were watching this. Húrin turned away, broken and bitter.<br />
<br />
Ulmo, the "patron god" of the city, watched with sad eyes, foreseeing the doom of Gondolin. He called forth Tuor, son of Huor, to the Sea, where he gave him a message for Turgon. Tuor delivered this message faithfully, by the aid of Ulmo and an elf named Voronwë, who guided him to the city. Ulmo's advice was that Turgon must abandon the city and seek the sea. For though hitherto the Valar had barred Turgon's messengers from reaching the Undying Lands, Ulmo foresaw that a direct descendant of the lords of the Noldor might be allowed to pass to the lands of the West. Turgon, because of his pride and the love of his city, decided to ignore this warning. Tuor, however, was welcomed in the city by all save Maeglin. Unwittingly, Turgon, who had always been so careful about strangers, further advanced the events that would lead to the fall of Gondolin by allowing Tuor to stay. For Tuor and Idril, the King's daughter, fell in love.<br />
<br />
It was an extremely rare thing for a man to wed an elf-woman, but Turgon, who loved Tuor as a son, permitted it when he found that his daughter was full willing. Maeglin hated Tuor for this, and plotted his revenge on Idril. . . and as the years passed, on their son, the beautiful Eärendil.<br />
<br />
===The Fall of Gondolin===<br />
Fall of Gondolin<br />
<br />
While searching for ore and straying (against the commands of Turgon) too far from the city, Maeglin was captured by Orcs. At his begging and bribing they took him before Morgoth himself, who extracted the information about Gondolin at a price: the death of Tuor and Eärendil, the hand of Idril, and the lordship of Gondolin after its capture.<br />
<br />
Maeglin returned to Gondolin and kept his capture by Morgoth a secret. Idril, however, who had noticed and rejected his advances, saw and feared the change that had come over him. Therefore she discussed with her husband the idea of making an escape tunnel. Tuor, confused but willing, complied. In secret, a tunnel that cut through the rock of the hill and out under Tumladen was constructed.<br />
<br />
At last Morgoth finalized his plan, and he loosed his massive army upon the city. Again Tuor and others urged Turgon to flee the brunt of the assault, but, convinced of the invincibility of his city (and with Maeglin whispering in his ear), Turgon decided to stay and fight.<br />
<br />
There was a great siege, during which Maeglin sought (from the inside) to take Idril and throw Eärendil from the walls. But Tuor arrived in time to save them both, and after a brief struggle hurled Maeglin down into the flames. But the city could not be saved, and thousands were killed. One by one the great lords of Gondolin fell, and Turgon, disillusioned and broken-hearted, ordered all to follow Tuor out through the tunnel when he saw that the destruction was inevitable. Only his guard stayed around him, and all who remained were killed as the white tower collapsed.<br />
<br />
Gathering as many of the people as they could find, Tuor and Idril escaped down the tunnel. It was a hard road through the mountains; Glorfindel was killed by a balrog that lay in ambush. But at last the Gondolindrim came to Nan-tathren, and after resting there for some time they came down to the refuge at the Mouths of Sirion, and mourned the loss of the White City.<br />

Tolkien drew several pictures of Gondolin himself, but his largest description of Gondolin is found in the Fall of Gondolin.<br />

<br />

<br />
<br />

==Etymology==<br />
Gondolin means "hidden rock" in Sindarin from gond "rock" and dolen "hidden".<br />
<br />
Gondolind is perhaps a Mithrimin name and means 'stone of music'. In proper Sindarin it was named Gonnólen which means "hidden rock". In Quenya it was named Ondolinde.<br />
<br />
In Eriol's Old English translations, Gondolin is referred as Stangaldor(burg) "stone-enchantment-(city)", Folgenburg "hidden city" Galdorfaesten "enchantment-fortress".<br />
<br />
==Other versions of the Legendarium==<br />
<br />
In The Book of Lost Tales, Gondolin was known as the City of Seven Names. Its other six names were (in Gnomish):<br />
* Gondobar (Stone House), translated into Qenya as Ondomard- or Ondosta<br />
* Gondothlimbar (House of the Stone Folk), translated into Qenya as Ondostamard-<br />
* Gwarestrin (Tower of Guard), translated into Qenya as Tiri(o)stirion or Vara-, Vorastirin<br />
* Gar Thurion (Secret Place), translated into Qenya as Ardalomba or Ardaurin<br />
* Loth (Flower), translated into Qenya as Losse (Rose)<br />
* Lothengriol (Flower of the Vale or Lily of the Valley), translated into Qenya as Endillos<br />

The Reunited Kingdom (also called the Two Kingdoms) was the restored kingdom of Arnor and Gondor, the twin kingdoms founded at the end of the Second Age by Elendil and his sons Isildur and Anárion. In the beginning, Elendil was High King of both realms, but the two were divided after the deaths of his sons. Over 3,000 years later Aragorn Elessar reunited the kingdoms and ruled as High King of the Reunited Kingdom.<br />
<br />
The fate of the kingdoms, especially that of Gondor, would come to dominate the history of the Third Age.<br />
<br />
==Geography==<br />
During Aragorn's reign, the Reunited Kingdom expanded to retake all territories that had originally belonged to both Arnor and Gondor at their greatest extents, excluding only Rohan (the grant of which he renewed), and the Shire, the Drúadan Forest, and Fangorn Forest (which became protectorates), under the protection of the Sceptre.<br />
<br />
The Reunited Kingdom included all the lands of Arnor; all of Eriador, except the regions beyond the Lune, and the lands east of Greyflood and Loudwater, in which lay Rivendell and Eregion.<br />
<br />
In Gondor, the realm extended:<br />
<br />
* North to the field of Celebrant and the southern eaves of Mirkwood<br />
* West to the Greyflood<br />
* East to the inland Sea of Rhûn<br />
* South to the River Harnen, and also along the coast to the peninsula and haven of Umbar<br />
<br />
==History==<br />
===Background===<br />
At the end of the Second Age, Elendil and his sons established two great kingdoms in Middle-earth: Arnor in the north and Gondor in the south. These Kingdoms of the Dúnedain were united under a single High King, Elendil himself, who ruled the North-kingdom while his sons reigned jointly over the South-kingdom of Gondor.<br />
<br />
In the first years of the Third Age, this union failed. After the loss of Isildur at the Disaster of the Gladden Fields, his nephew Meneldil took up the kingship of Gondor, and that country remained independent from the North-kingdom through most of the Third Age. <br />
<br />
===Dissolutions===<br />
In the north, the realm of Arnor fell into troubled times. It broke into three separate kingdoms, and in time these too were lost, so that the Dúnedain of the North-kingdom of Elendil were reduced to a wandering people led by a Chieftain. Nonetheless, they were able to maintain Isildur's line in unbroken descent.<br />
<br />
However, this failed in Gondor, and Eärnur was lost without heirs. Its rule was taken up by the Stewards. <br />
<br />
There were two attempts to reunite the kingdoms. The first of these occurred in 1944 when Arvedui of Arthedain claimed the High Kingship of the Two Kingdoms. His claim was rejected by Steward Pelendur and the Council of Gondor, who elected to maintain their independence.<br />
<br />
===Reunification and Later History===<br />
More than a thousand years later, after the War of the Ring, Arvedui's direct descendant, Aragorn, came forward to make the same claim. This time, the people of Gondor accepted a High King, and the Two Kingdoms were reunited at last. <br />
<br />
Aragorn ruled from Minas Tirith which was the chief city, but he travelled throughout his wide lands. He rebuilt Annúminas and when he went north, would rule from there. He also had the ruins of Fornost Erain rebuilt and made it a great city where Men dwelt once again. The Shire was an exception to this, and though it lay within the Reunited Kingdom, Aragorn made a law that Men should not enter it, a law that he observed himself.<br />
<br />
During his reign, he, alongside King Éomer, led military campaigns beyond the Sea of Rhûn and on the far fields of the South. As a result, he was able to re-establish his dominance in places which Gondor initially held at the height of its power. The threat of the Corsairs was finally completely subdued during his reign and Umbar was finally re-taken. He also made peace with the Haradrim after his coronation.<br />
<br />
After Aragorn's death in 120, his son Eldarion took up the High Kingship. One hundred years into his reign, he encountered a renewal of Morgoth-worship known as the "Dark Tree". In a 1972 letter concerning The New Shadow, Tolkien mentioned that Eldarion's reign would have lasted for about 100 years after the death of Aragorn. <br />
<br />
Of Eldarion, it was foretold that he should rule a great realm, and that it should endure for a hundred generations of Men after him, that is until a new age brought in again new things; and from him should come the kings of many realms in long days after. But if this foretelling spoke truly, none now can say, for Gondor and Arnor are no more; and even the chronicles of the House of Elessar and all their deeds and glory are lost. <br />

Hithlum.mp3<br />
Hithlum (S, pron. [ˈhiθlum]) was a region north of Beleriand near the Helcaraxë.<br />
<br />
==Description==<br />
Hithlum was separated from Beleriand proper by the Ered Wethrin mountain chain, and was named after the sea mists which formed there at times. The Ered Wethrin ("Mountains of Shadow") formed the southern and eastern wall, and had only a few passes; as such they formed a natural defensive line. The western wall was formed by the Ered Lómin or "Echoing Mountains", which curved north-westward to Helcaraxë. The land of Lammoth lay west of the Ered Wethrin and was not part of Beleriand or Hithlum, and the land of Nevrast was separated from Hithlum by the southern part of the Ered Lómin. Hithlum was cold and rainy, but quite fertile.<br />
<br />
Hithlum was subdivided in Mithrim, where the High Kings of the Noldor had their halls, and Dor-lómin, which later became a fief of the House of Hador.<br />
<br />
==History==<br />
Hithlum was populated by the Elves of Mithrim who were Sindar. The Ñoldor entered Hithlum via the Firth of Drengist and first camped at the shores of Lake Mithrim. The land was covered by mists and vapours from the Thangorodrim, and thus they named it Hísilómë or Land of Mist. Thingol gave leave to the Noldor to settle it and was ruled by Fingolfin and Fingon from its northern lands. <br />
<br />
Later in the First Age, Hithlum was continually under attack by Morgoth, but its natural defenses, fortified by fortresses such as Barad Eithel, proved impassable. Almost a century after the Dagor Aglareb, a small number of Orcs came from the Firth of Drengist from the west, but once they were spotted, Fingon pushed them back into the sea.<br />
<br />
In 416 Fingolfin granted Hador a hereditary fiefdom in Dor-lómin, where he gathered most of the people of his kin, thus forming the noble House of Hador. The mountains protected Hithlum during the Dagor Bragollach, after which Edain of the First House came from Dorthonion as refugees and joined those of Hador. <br />
<br />
Seven years after the Dagor Bragollach, Morgoth sent a great force against Hithlum, attacking the passes of the Ered Wethrin. Galdor died defending the Eithel Sirion; in a second attempt the Falathrim sailed up the Firth of Drengist, then assisted Fingon by striking the unsuspecting orcs from the west.<br />
<br />
Hithlum eventually was lost after the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. The Hadorians were scattered, killed, or enslaved, the Noldor who could not flee in time were enslaved in Morgoth's mines. Morgoth gave the Swarthy Men the lands of Hithlum as a reward, but actually they were trapped there.<br />
<br />
Hithlum was completely destroyed during the War of Wrath.<br />
<br />
==Etymology==<br />
Hithlum is a North Sindarin word, meaning "Mist-shadow" (hith + lum), a translation from Quenya Hísilómë (pron. [ˌhisiˈloːme], stem Hisilómi-). Its classical Sindarin name is said to be Hithlũ. In the days of Túrin the region was called Aryador in the language of Men.<br />
<br />
Tolkien initially marked the word as Noldorin; its second element was cognate to Quenya lumbe.<br />

High King<br />
<br />
High King of the Noldor was the title of the head of the House of Finwë in Beleriand and Middle-earth. It was held by Elf-lords of the Noldor who held rulership over all the Noldorin realms. The overlordship was mostly titular; the Sons of Fëanor, in particular, while they acknowledged the Kingship, paid its bearer little heed; they preferred to follow their own policies under the general leadership of Maedhros.<br />
<br />
The forefather of the House of Finwë was Finwë, the first lord of the Tatyar who led his people in the Great Journey from Cuiviénen into the West to dwell in Valinor. He was slain by Morgoth at Formenos. <br />
<br />

#Fëanor (ruled from 1495 – 1497)<br>He led the host of the Noldor back to Middle-earth to avenge his father's death and recover the Silmarils from Morgoth. He was slain in his assault on Angband. After his death, the Kingship by right belonged to his eldest son Maedhros, but he refused it and the succession passed instead to Fëanor's half-brother, Fingolfin.<br />
#Fingolfin (ruled from 5 - 456)<br>He dwelt to the northwest of Beleriand with his sons, and ruled the Noldor during the Siege of Angband. When Morgoth broke the leaguer in the Dagor Bragollach, he rode in anger to the gates of Angband and died in single combat with Morgoth. He was succeeded by his eldest son.<br />
# Fingon (ruled from 456 - 472)<br>His short reign was one of endless war with the forces of Morgoth. With Maedhros, he prepared a final assault on Morgoth, the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, which ended in disaster for the Noldor and Fingon's own death. He was succeeded by his brother.<br />
# Turgon (ruled from 472 - 510)<br>Turgon's kingship was titular indeed, as it was not possible for him to rule from his Hidden City, the location of which was unknown by even his own kin. That was until Gondolin's location was discovered by Morgoth through the treachery of Maeglin, and Turgon died in its Fall. After his death, the Kingship passed to the Finarfin line, with the son of Orodreth.<br />
# Ereinion Gil-galad (ruled from 510 - 3441)<br>The last High King, Gil-galad held the Kingship longer than any of his forebears ruling through the Second Age. He was the chief enemy of Sauron in the Dark Years, at the end of which he formed the Last Alliance with Elendil, and died during the Siege of Barad-dûr at the end of the Second Age. <br />
<br />
Gil-galad was the last High King; after his time the title is never used, as obviously no heirs of the House of Fëanor or House of Fingolfin remained in Middle-earth. Galadriel of the<br />
House of Finarfin perhaps could have some rights. Elrond was a direct descendant of Turgon, but through his daughter Idril; he never made claim to the Kingship but ruled with all its authority. <br />

The Elves of Mithrim were the Sindarin inhabitants of the land of Mithrim.<br />
<br />
The Elves of Mithrim crossed into Hithlum from Beleriand at some time before the rising of the Sun, settling in the regions around Lake Mithrim. They were the first Elves of Middle-earth encountered by the Noldor when they returned from Aman. <br />
<br />
Fingolfin took up lordship in Hithlum, with most of his own people dwelling around the shores of Lake Mithrim, and there was a degree of intermingling between the two peoples. It is not stated to what extent the Grey-elves of Mithrim participated in the Wars of Beleriand under Fingolfin and Fingon. <br />
<br />
After the Nirnaeth Arnoediad, they sheltered Rían; when she departed Hithlum, one of the Elves, Annael, fostered her son Tuor.<br />
<br />
==Language==<br />
The Elves of Mithrim spoke a marked dialect of Sindarin.<br />
<br />
==Etymology==<br />
Mithrim has two alternate etymologies. In the earlier version, Mithrim was Noldorin in origin, including the roots mith- "fog, misty, grey" and -rhim(b) "cold" or "cold lake".<br />
<br />
A later version is that Mithrim "grey folk" was applied by the Sindar of Beleriand to their kindred who had gone north into Hithlum. The climate north of Ered Wethrin was cool, misty, and grey, but the Elves also wove a grey cloth that aided in their concealment. It is also suggested that the Noldor first used the term Sindar (or Sindeldi) to refer to the Elves of Mithrim, later applying it to all the Sindarin-speaking Elves of Beleriand.<br />
