The siege of Sauron's Dark Tower by the forces of the Last Alliance at the end of the Second Age. Gil-galad, Elendil and Elendil's son Anárion all lost their lives in the Siege, but ultimately Sauron was defeated and the Barad-dûr thrown down, at least for a time.
