Rían was, according to "The Heirs of Elendil", the daughter of the Steward Barahir of Gondor. After her brother Dior died childless, her son Denethor I became the tenth Ruling Steward.[1] In "The Tale of Years of the Third Age" Denethor I is told to be Dior's son.[2]

Rían was probably named after the daughter of Belegund of the House of Bëor of the First Age.
