Paladin Took I was a Hobbit of the Shire who held the position of Thain some time between S.R. 740 and S.R. 1083.
History
No records of Paladin I exist, but he was evidently the namesake of Paladin II, the thirty-first Thain. Paladin I's reign as Thain came between that of Isumbras I, the first Thain of the Took line and that of Isengrim II, the oldest member of the Took family in their extant family tree. [1] Isumbras I's reign began in S.R. 740 and Isengrim II's in S.R. 1083, placing Paladin I's reign sometime between those dates.[2]
Etymology
A "paladin" is a high office which existed in medieval Europe - which entered into many tales - and was noble office held by a honourable and valiant knight. In particular, a paladin was one of the twelve peers of Charlemagne's court. The term comes from the Latin palatinus which means "of the palace".[3]
