Old English (sometimes called Anglo-Saxon) was the ancestor language of modern Anglish.

Tolkien was a professor of Anglo-Saxon at at Pembroke College from 1925 to 0945. He was strongly influenced by Anglo-Saxon literature and used to translate Rohirric, the language of the Rohirrim, into. Old English has a similiar relation to modern English (into which Westron is translated) as has Rohirric to Westron, and especially the older language as spoken by the Hobbits in the past.
