Lord of the Ring was a rare title for Sauron, the master of the One Ring. In fact, it occurs only once in The Lord of the Rings: in Rivendell, where Pippin wrongly proclaimed Frodo as such, but was quickly corrected by Gandalf. Its more famous appearance is in the title of Tolkien's narrative, with "rings" in the plural, indicating the other Rings of Power.
