On c. 12 April 1970, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter to Tom Shippey. Shippey received the letter on 13 April 1970.[1][2]

  • Subject: Comments on Shippey's paper "The Author as Philologist" (sent by Shippey to Tolkien).[1]
  • Publication: Quotes from the letter were published in The Road to Middle-earth.[3] Shippey also briefly describes the letter in "Long Evolution: The History of Middle-earth and Its Merits" (in Arda 1987, Vol. VII, p. 29)[2] and in Roots and Branches.[4]
