On 8 December 1956, J.R.R. Tolkien wrote a letter to Anthony Roberts.[1]

  • Contents: Replying to a fan, Tolkien explains why the publication of the "legends of the First and Second Ages, including those related to the Silmarils ('The Silmarillion')" is delayed: "...unfortunately I am still a busy official and a 'professor' with a considerable amount of other things on hand ... I am afraid there are no hobbits in these stories, and not much of every-day reality, and that makes me doubtful about their reception."[1]
  • Description: One-page, handwritten letter.[1]
