Hallatan was respected by the people of Mittalmar and represented the region in the Council of the Sceptre.[1] Later, he served as the first Regent of Númenor when Tar-Aldarion traveled to Middle-earth in 883 or 884.[2]
Hallatan would become a member of the royal family when his son married Tar-Ancalimë, the first Ruling Queen of Númenor.[3] Due to his ownership of herds of sheep Hallatan acquired the epithet "Sheep-lord".[4]
Etymology
Hallatan is a Quenya name. Its meaning is not glossed, but Paul Strack suggests it means "Tall Man" from halla ("tall") and Atan ("Man").[5]
